#AtlantaCreatives: the local artists who inspire us

Through a mix of mediums, formats and perspectives local artists illuminate the unknown, color the previously black-and-white and add depth to our understanding of our surroundings, our lives, circumstances and more. Through our research process for the Thought provokers series we’ve come across so many works of art that have inspired us and we’d like to share some of those great examples of visual and performing arts, photography and other creative works with you below.

🎨: @shanequagay Shanequa Gay’s work explores the tensions found within systemic codes in which the black body -hunted, sexualized, feared, imprisoned – is also seen as symbol of grandeur. Welding deeply political statements and integrating imagery from the black body into paintings, toile schema, found objects, and media addresses the use of the black body and the control of that body for decorative purposes. – Shanequa Gay, an Atlanta native, has drawn praise and critical acclaim for her current work art as advocacy projects which challenge the unyielding violence and injustices committed in America and across the globe against the black body. – Shanequa’s work will be displayed alongside other Atlanta artists tonight at @octanewestside! Come hang and check it out for yourself. RSVP in link in bio. ✌🏼✊🏽 . . . . . #supportlocalart #atlartist #atlart #atlantaart #weloveatl #discoveratl #chooseatl #ibelieveinatlanta #atlcreatives #atlevents #artinamerica #atlartshow #artofinstagram #clatl #creativeloafing #supportatlart #atlartscene #atlanta #atlien #femaleartist #femaleartists #artcollector #artcollective #artcollection #artoftheday

A friend of mine created an instagram called @storybehindthis. What makes it amazing is that it shines a light into our lives that we don't typically share. We're used to sharing the highlight reels, but as the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." This picture was taken towards the end of our 13 mile hike from the Havasupai Trail head in Arizona. This trip took a month to plan and two of us only got permits maybe a week or two in advance. By the time we got to the first falls we were exhausted, could feel blisters starting to form and so ready for some food! Seeing something as magnificent as this, you tend to forget small aches and pains and it keeps us going. · I couldn't have been more grateful for each and every decision that was made that had brought us up to the point of taking this shot. · #instatravel #outdoors #nature #getoutside #breathtaking #view #keepitwild #simplyadventure #optoutside #rei #lifeofadventure #liveoutdoors #makemoments #exploremore #stayandwander #goexplore #exploringtheworld #liveauthentic #neverstopexploring #passionpassport #keepuptheadventure #hiking #worldtraveler #wanderlust #traveler #travel
