What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?

All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others.  At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more.  We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

Ashley Love-Mills — Actress & Model

The best advice I’ve discovered while working in entertainment is to be unmoved by those around you, especially those who do not see your vision. At times, people will try to pressure you to make certain decisions or move in a way that best suits them. But remain unmoved and true to who you are, trusting your gut because it will never lead you wrong.

Rebecca Lynn Bridges-model, college student, and aspiring actress

Best advice: Never stop going after your goals and to continue setting new goals for yourself. Keep growing and keep learning.

Sara Naomi- Model/Actress

The best advice that I’ve received is actually from Al Pacino. “”Dont let yourself get attached to anything you’re not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner””.
This has been great advice for me because its kept me from being manipulated or distracted using something I care about. I had the opportunity to go to cape town to pursue my dream of modeling, but to do so I had to quit my job. Thanks to Al Pacino, it was something I didnt even have to think twice about :).

Jack Blair- art director and illustrator at the Creative Circus

I would say the best advice I’ve received is to enjoy the creative process more than the end result.

From my dad: “”don’t be in a hurry settle into a job.””
From a stranger: “”you don’t need [from teachers] validation.””
From myself to myself: “”an enormous ego is allowable only if 100% of the space isn’t reserved for yourself.”” & “”don’t spend another moment hoarding yourself. “”

The best professional advice I’ve received wasn’t actual told to me, but received through experience. I learned that I am enough in the niche that I was created for, in a well saturated industry. The Beauty industry is saturated by many. So I had to learn how to stand out in the industry, but still keeping the balance of doing the things that I love to do. Not doing what everyone wanted me to do, like extensions, hair color, etc. I found out that all of the things that I loved to do; Styling hair, makeup, styling fashion, producing runway shows and photo shoots, even taking photos myself- making me a photographer. Made me stand out from the pack. Not many people can do all of these things, and do them fairly well. I do!

By being true to yourself. No matter what industry you’re in, you will always win! People can read through people and things that are ingenuine. Be authentic. Stand for what you love and believe in. I’m sure its someone out there who feels just the same as you, which will create a following for you! Someone will like you for you, and you will be successful for it. Believe in yourself, and the creator who made you. You are not a mistake.
