#GirlBoss: redefining what a boss looks like

Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?

Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.

We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.

We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes.

Jocelyn McKissick – Wardrobe Consultant

There is nothing that you cannot overcome. We tend to forget how strong we are and that we can’t be beat. Always keep your head high and remember, that someone might have it worse than you. Be grateful for your life and push through.

Let Go & Let God (or your higher power): As a young woman on an active faith journey, I’m realizing that I can’t do it all on my own, and that’s what I’d tell a friend facing an overwhelming obstacle. Despite how strong and independent you think you are, you have to hand it over to God or the higher power you draw your strength from. Often times we believe that God doesn’t put more on us than we can bear. But, the Bible never said that, what we have to learn is that God will put more on us that we can bear without HIM, because He’s calling us to lean on HIM to face these insurmountable challenges. There is a higher power to lean into and on when the world feels like it’s against you. But, we have to first submit to this calling and plan—despite misunderstanding and frustration—and know that everything is going to alright!

When facing challenges that you may feel unbearable first is to take a deep breath, exhale and repeat to self: I will get through this. Also remind yourself that when looking at the world your situation could be worst. I encourage my clients to keep journal of their thoughts. Write it out to get it out. Releasing it via writing is a safe way for people to recover from a hurtful situation. Remember there is only one you and develop a love for oneself that surpasses your situation.

The advice I have is that like the great Frederick Douglass said without struggle there’s no progress. So if we look at our challenges we’re facing as the struggle we have to go through to get to our progress we’ll appreciate it more.

In your darkest moments when it seems that nothing is going right, it is imperative to consciously remain positive and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. It is empowering! Many obstacles in our lives may seem insurmountable and limiting, but successful people throughout history have proven that although obstacles are unavoidable; they did not give up on themselves. DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOU! It is the obstacles that make your success even more fulfilling.

Evonnie Houston – IT Analyst & Real Estate Investor

Every setback is a setup for a comeback.  Trust God, seek him for guidance and don’t give up.  Refer back to your “why” or your purpose in life and go after it.  For example, I’ve been asked several times what is your why for being a Real Estate Investor.  Well, quite honestly besides being able to provide for my family, travel, etc., I want to help others and invest in our next generation. I want to be an example to underprivileged children and their families.  That’s what makes me happy at the end of the day.  Ask yourself, what is it that makes you happy.

The best advice I would give to someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is to keep pushing! You can overcome anything that you put your mind to. Break the issue down into smaller pieces and make achievements bit by bit. Also understand that whatever issue you are going through, someone else in this world has also gone through and overcame. You may not see the light at the end of the tunnel right now, but know that nothing lasts forever, better times are ahead. Speak positive affirmations over your situation. Take a journal and write down the best case scenario and make goals towards it. To take some stress off, blast your favorite song – dance and sing to it; Google inspirational quotes. No one’s life is perfect, we all go through things. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you’re probably doing better than you think. If you are afraid of other people’s opinions on how you handle your challenge, pay them no mind, they will talk whether you are doing good or doing bad – so do you! Always remember, you are awesome! You can do it!!

I believe that there is nothing ever too impossible to overcome. There is much that we as humans are capable of doing and over coming when we set our mind in tune with the right attitude. Attitude determines your action and when you have a positive and determined attitude to overcome any situation you will succeed.

Lindsey Ramsey – Associate Broker

As far as advice this is pretty basic but speaks to me regarding things that seem insurmountable.  Everything is figureoutable. I’m sure it’s poor grammar but truly almost all things can be solved when you either ask for help or really step back and ask yourself if this ‘problem’ is just a problem for the moment or a problem for life.

Pray. Nothing is going to happen without god, be thankful for what you have now so when you get everything you finally deserve you’ll already feel so blessed for what you have.

When you are faced with problems that are insurmountable, breath. Focus on the small moments and the good, changing things one piece at a time. Remember that we only see a small portion of the grand picture. God will carry you through it, simply have faith and breathe. You still have not lived your best days, remind yourself they are ahead.

My advice for anyone who is facing a challenge is to reach out and communicate with someone they trust. Talking to someone can change your perspective on the situation and possibly help you see a new side of things. Also I want everyone to know that they always have someone to reach out to, no matter how alone they feel. I always suggest to face the problem head on and never run away from it because it will only get worse, and lastly no matter how difficult the situation maybe always choose love and kindness in the midst of hardships because even though you are going through something difficult you never know who may need that compassion in their lives!
