What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?

All of us are where we are today partly because of our own efforts and partly because of the advice, guidance, influence and inspiration provided by others.  At Voyage we have the good fortune of connecting with so many of the city’s hidden gems – from entrepreneurs and creatives to athletes, researchers and more.  We asked them a simple, but important question: what is the best advice, personal or professional, that you’ve ever received?

Julian Reynolds – renowned makeup artist with over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry

The best piece of professional advice I was ever given was from my mom. She told me ”no matter what job you are given, do it to the best of your ability. Every day you are at work is your interview for your next possession or job”. You never know who is watching.

Leslie Haas-social media agency owner

The best advice I’ve ever received is to remember your job is always to make the life easier of the person you’re working for – regardless of whether it’s a boss or a client.

RaShun Brackins – Male Model

I was told to always be consistent and stay persistent. Also, be a resilient person because it’ll be a tough road at times. They told me to keep in mind that I’m not in competition with other models per say because every individual has their own look. Told me, I needed to focus on perfecting my craft and polishing my own look because I can’t do anything about what others appear to look like. Told me to make sure I always have a positive attitude even when faced with adversity because it will set me apart from others when I’m the light in the midst of darkness. Told me to never stop , and no matter how long it takes, to always keep going. Lastly, but most importantly, keep God first!

Angela Hannah Robinson – Journalist, Publicist and Blogger

I’ve actually received two pieces of advice that I deem “”the best””. The first, though it will sound super cliche, is to just be yourself. I think sometimes I focus so hard on trying to fit in that I don’t spend enough time loving myself and even getting to know myself. So right now, I’m sort of on this journey of self-discovery to find out who “”Angela”” truly is so that I can be the best version of who that is.
My second great piece of advice is to not feel like you have to have it all together. I think in this day and age, there’s this competition to be the most successful at the youngest age, like have a house and your dream car at 22 or be millionaire/billionaire at 25. But the reality is, everyone is on their own path, and you can’t compare yourself to others. This is something that I am continually learning, especially being in the field that I am in. It can be hard to see someone creating their own company and not feel like I’m falling behind. But I know that what God has for me is for me and that it will come in due time.

Zuleka Grant -Acrylic and Oil Painter

The best advice I’ve received.. that’s a hard one it would probably be what my grandmother told me when I was little “You were brought into this world to bring your gifts and talents to the universe“ Now that I’ve followed the gift and talent that I was given by the Most High and decided not to care about how or what others think of me doing that I’ve been blessed indeed!

Trusting that God has a good plan for my life is #1 for me because I can make all of the plans and strategies in the world, but at the end of the day I can’t force a path for myself that isn’t intended for me. So I aim to practice doing the best that I can, using wisdom, practicing consistency, and then leaving the rest for God to work out because he knows more than I do and his plan is better than mine is. Remembering this helps add perspective to the lows of life. Romans 8:28 says, “…all things work together for good to them that love God…”. This frees me from the burden of trying to control outcomes and helps me enjoy my life journey. It’s important to remember that no one else can add to the world what you can in the way that you do. So own it!”

The best piece of personal and professional advice I have received is this: There are a lot of people in the world who will mistreat you, lie to you, and not care for you. Don’t be that to yourself. Always do right by yourself, be honest with yourself, and engage in regular self-care: mentally, emotionally, and physically. You teach others how to treat you by the way you treat yourself.

Tyler Edwards- Co-Founder of atlantatshirts

The best advice I’ve received is you can either work hard now and play later or play now and work hard later. I’m going to work hard right now!

The best advice I’ve received and it can be used for both personal and professional is one simple saying, “”Speak Life!”” If you want it…think about it, speak about it, focus on it, visualize it, claim it! To me it goes along with the laws of attraction, if you know anything about it ,relate it to life and your business, especially being an entrepreneur.

Temporary pain makes for long term healing, spiritual growth and confidence.

Anne Kimberly Neal of AnneKimNeal Jewelry – Owner, Designer, and Graduate Gemologist

The best advice I’ve received was from a good friend of mine’s mom who is very successful. She told me to find my passion and make it my job – whether it’s designing jewelry or calculating math problems. You have to love it! She inspired me to take the plunge and start my own company.

Best advice I received was: to always trust the process no matter what because everything will happen in Gods timing

The best advice I’ve received so far is too just keep striving and believing in myself. Also to take nothing personal just grow and progress from any situations.

Manny Williams- Entrepreneur and Entertainer

And the best advice given to me this far is by the great Billy Porter himself, “ whatever you do, always go in being your AUTHENTIC self. Never, the version you think someone else wants!”
