Hidden Gems: Local Businesses & Creatives You Should Know

Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series.  Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

The passion for teaching children came from my first job out of college. I started with a chain childcare center “teaching” 4 year olds and honestly was struck by how boring it was. After mutilating a frog in high school biology class with the dull scalpels my high school let us use, I decided that maybe being a Veterinarian was not for me. When I graduated from Jacksonville State University in 2015, I was offered a short-term video editing contract opportunity that turned into a long-term contract. When it made the shift from short-term to long-term, I was advised to create an LLC; and thus my company was created in April 2016. Even though video editing was the primary focus because of the contract, I still seized opportunities that allowed some photography. Unfortunately, like many contract based opportunities, when COVID hit in 2020, my company took a huge hit as well. Because of the occasional photography booking, I never had to dissolve my company.
