Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Johnson.
Beth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A native Midwesterner, I was the “artistic” one in a family of engineers. I grew up with practical values and German heritage where it was important to do things right the first time. My dad was an entrepreneur and could fix just about anything, and during high school, he encouraged me to work at a hardware store. Little did I know, that knowledge of tools and construction materials that I gained at that job would prepare me for my career in interior design.
After college (the first time), I worked in the corporate world for several years and went back to college part time to pursue a degree in interior design. At the time, I was helping run a manufacturing business that my father started. I managed all of the sales and marketing functions and worked with strategic accounts like Amazon, American Honda, Costco, Grainger, and others.
After we sold our family business, I had the opportunity to do interior design full time and discovered that I have a unique set of skills that set me apart from other design professionals. Applying my creativity, practical know-how, project management skills and business acumen to the field of interior design makes me better equipped to tackle my clients’ projects in a professional and timely manner. I pull from a variety of sources and I have a team that expands to accommodate the needs of every project.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m a single mom, and working for myself hasn’t always been easy. The ups and downs of the economy affect my business a great deal; we all pull back on home projects when money is tight. So, I’ve had to come up with creative ways to generate income. Navigating the jungle of health insurance as a self-employed professional has been interesting over the past several years!
In light of the challenges, I know that I’m right where I’m meant to be, and I lean on my vast experience and connections to lead me to my next opportunity. I don’t believe in coincidence. Everything happens for a reason. I have to work, so it’s important for me to enjoy what I do and feel that the work I do makes a difference in people’s lives. It’s true that if you do what you love, the money will follow.

My clients hire me because they don’t have the time, desire or know-how to make their house a home. I work with clients on everything from choosing paint colors, selecting home furnishings for any room in the house to managing full-scale remodeling projects.
For several years, I’ve been doing consultations and reviews on exterior paint colors for Windward, a 3400-acre community in Alpharetta with 2400 homes in 40 subdivisions, to advise homeowners on design trends in order to maintain and enhance their property values. I’ve become adept at doing bath renovations, and I enjoy transforming these spaces from dated to dreamy in about 5 weeks. In fact, I was named one of Atlanta’s top bath designers by My Home Improvement magazine in November 2017 when my favorite bath remodels won the 3rd place in a contest. I am proud to say that I provide thorough quotes, transparent pricing and an experienced, trustworthy team of craftsmen to help with the transformation, and my business background and project management experience are what set me apart from other design professionals.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
As women, we are uniquely created to be nurturing, and I take this role seriously. We all handle the things that happen to us BETTER when we have a team of cheerleaders around us, telling us YOU GOT THIS. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. So, I think it’s important for women to build each other up and help to cultivate a community of encouragers around us. As Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” We can have a huge impact on the world if we just build each other up.
