Check Out Chef K. Ray’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef K. Ray.

Hi Chef K, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in St. Louis. Upon graduating high school joined the military in which I did 3 tours of combat in Iraq. After four years in service, I got out and due to not having a plan I went to Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. I have always enjoyed cooking and being around the kitchen and food, but I didnt think it was a real career. Going to culinary school opened my eyes to where I could go within the industry. Graduated top of my class and has been at it every since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been easy at all. The long days and nights and being away from my kids. Having a fine dining background I don’t fit the description of your typical chef. I have tattoos, where earrings, wear my hat backwards and I’m black. Some of the chefs did their best to get me to not believe in my abilities and that I wasn’t good enough to work in their kitchens, but to no avail. Even after proving my abilities I have even been overlooked for higher positions.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a restaurant consultant who is hands on with growing restaurants and helping them get out of the red. I am also a traveling chef who takes on celebrity clients. I do not focus on a specialty I do what I can to learn as much as I can so that I can cater to everyone. I am most proud of my perseverance and understanding that cooking is my calling. I am also proud of the determination I have displayed to continue to get better and prove to myself and others that I can tango with the best of them. My work ethic and wont be denied mindset is what sets me apart from others within the industry.

What does success mean to you?
Success is being happy in your situation. When work is not work because you love doing it and you are at peace that is success.
