Conversations with the Inspiring Emmamuelle Poin Du Jour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmamuelle Poin Du Jour.

Emmamuelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

Growing up, I was always fascinated by fashion and luxury living. I even dreamt of becoming either a fashion designer or a fashion merchandiser. At that time, Paris was the capital for fashion and where one needed to be in order to succeed in that industry. Unfortunately, instead of going to Paris, I moved to the United States, and due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to put my dream in the back burner, and practically forgot about it, until I visited Dubai, United Arabs Emirates two years ago.

I believe Dubai has magical power, or maybe that trip was just what I needed at the time to resuscitate what life circumstances has killed inside of me. I fell in love with its skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa, the opulence of the Sheilh Zayed Mosque, and the tantalizing aroma of their oud fragrances. So, when I returned to the U.S., I decided to open an online store selling fashion accessories from around the world and oud perfumes from Dubai.

Having a great idea is not enough if you don’t have a plan to bring it to life. So, I had to research on customs laws regarding importing oil-based perfumes, and which courier was more cost-effective and which company offers more benefits and user-friendly for a website. All this took me about three months and a half, and towards the end of November 2017, Emma’s World Treasures was officially launched.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Emma’s World Treasures has been in business for almost two years. But there are days, I still want to pull my hair out and start screaming, or crying, because being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. It’s not as glamorous or easy as most people picture it to be. However, the journey does build your character and give you tenacity. I had to learn to be patient with myself, my shortcomings. It’s as if I was being introduced to a version of myself that was hidden. We live in a society that screams “Time is money”, but when dealing with the retailers, I had to take into account their culture and background, and most of the time, that meant learning to go with their rhythm and not mine. Additionally, as a woman in business, I had to learn to command respect and negotiate in a feminine but firm voice and attitude.

I also had to be patient with the overall process, and be willing to put in the work, even when I don’t see any results or progress. I had to be okay with spending weeks without seeing a sale, and still advertise on social media platforms as if my business was booming. I had to make peace with some family members and friends who were not supporting my business. I realized that it wasn’t their dreams in the first place, so they were not required to support it. Also, in this journey, people in your immediate surrounding will have a hard time accepting that you are evolving and try to keep you stuck, and that’s when you will have to say “This is not who I was predestined to be and I need to go”. And guess what? Once you do that, you will meet awesome people going through the same process who will understand and support you.

So, my advice to young entrepreneurs is to: “Not be afraid of the grind- so many beautiful things can come out of that journey. Also, be your biggest loudest cheerleader -You are going to need the encouragement when crossing certain roads on this journey.”

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Emma’s World Treasures story. Tell us more about it.

Emma’s World Treasures is an online store with a TWIST. My goal is not only to sell women unique items that magnify their outer beauty, but I also want to empower their inner being. I do that by participating in local women empowerment events as a vendor. I always do a little speech to introduce myself and tell my story as an immigrant from Haiti and a single mom to remind the women in the audience that if I can succeed in spite of the roadblocks life threw at me, so can they. Also, most of my social media posts have empowering messages on them while promoting my items.

Couple of months after starting my online store and promoting it on social media, I felt something was missing, and that something was the message of who I am as a person and what my store stands for. I wanted to do more than just sell people’s exotic items and fragrances. I wanted to attach a message to it. I realized that, like me, a lot of the women and even men who came across my account, are dealing with life’s stress, and sometimes, a positive word is what they needed before considering buying a sexy perfume or colorful head wrap or pashmina to lift up their spirit. So by accompanying my posts on social media with a word of encouragement or empowerment, I was pouring positivity into their life, which is what I felt was missing at the beginning. So even if a potential customer  doesn’t make a purchase, he or she still comes out with a positive thought, and I think in a way, that makes us both a winner. And hopefully, next time, that person needs a gift, he or she will think of my store. This approach is so important to me, that I decided to give my online store a complete makeover to include positive messages while promoting the products.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I learned early in life that I had to fight for everything that I want. Nothing was going to be handed to me on a silver platter, and the little battles I had to deal with growing up, prepared me to fight to see my business come to life. Having great communication skill was also a powerful tool, so I took the time to sharpen that skill when interacting with others.
