Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Lowther.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shelley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The first time I tried yoga, I decided it was not for me. I found my way back to the mat years later after a serious injury. When I say yoga saved my life, it is not an exaggeration. I was significantly overweight, on anxiety and anti-depressants, and smoking and drinking excessively. The surgeon told me I would likely always walk with a limp, and that I would certainly never run again. Yet yoga quickly healed me, and I far exceeded the doctor’s best-case scenario. I tapered off the medications, lost weight, and developed a strong and heart-centered yoga practice. Practicing yoga gave me access to my body, my health, and gave me back my life.
I’ve been a business owner since my mid-twenties. I was a real estate broker and I owned Irish pubs. Opening a yoga studio was a natural step for me once I knew that yoga was an important part of my life. I feel compelled to share the tools that changed my life so dramatically with others. It is my dharma.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The obstacles in your path are your path. This road has not always been easy. I took a pretty big pay cut to leave the bar and restaurant industry and get into the yoga industry. And I have met with a lot of criticism for treating yoga like a business (pro-tip: if you have a brick and mortar place, you have to). If you want to work in a field that you love, you must trust yourself and trust the universe. Even when things get hard, the universe always has your back. Stay focused. Keep your faith. And always keep going.
What should we know about Dancing Dogs Yoga? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a yoga studio owner, most people know that I teach yoga. I love teaching in the studio and at community events all over the city. My favorite piece of my job is training yoga teachers. I know that my biggest work is helping more people share this practice.
I have been leading yoga teacher trainings at the 200 and 500 hour level for almost a decade. To date, I have trained hundreds of yoga teachers. What I love the most is seeing people walk in on the first weekend unsure of how to share, and seeing these same magical humans just a few months later— ready to change the world.
The work goes so far beyond asana. Whether I am leading a yoga teacher training, yoga or spiritual retreat, or teaching in the studio, I know that there is so much power in the inquiry, the svadyaya, and in the development of leaders. I was born to share this work and feel immense gratitude that I get to share and lead it.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My parents instilled in me that I could do anything. I have never believed in giving up, and that certainly has propelled me to where I am today.
