Conversations with Courtnie May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtnie May.

Hi Courtnie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started this journey back in 2018 with my very first art show at the Masquerade in Atlanta, GA. I had just uprooted my whole idea of what living was and decided to put body, mind, and soul into this energy that I was feeling. – I went head first into the art industry with no idea where I was headed. But I soon realized that the art world held a stiff competition. The competitive environment that surrounded me made me decide to go about vending/selling art completely differently. I had an idea that I could make an art collective to help myself and other artists grow in this community. I felt as if I was lacking a sense of security because I had no idea what I was doing but over the years I have gained so much knowledge from working in the industry and learning from so many amazing people that I realized I could really do some good for the community. So I started working with my friends and trying to find people that wanted to be a part of a “Creator Community”. We have over time been able to create a network and learning system for new creatives in the community to get started- we’re all helping each other grow! I’m proud to say after four solid years we are getting close to our long-term goals of having a permanent artist collective property! Over the years we’ve had over 50-60 people join up and work alongside us- from painters, carpenters, clothing designers, musicians, fire performers, and anything in between! I’ve seen so much growth within the community over the last few years, and to see that what we’re doing for fellow creatives is in turn inspiring others to be open and willing to grow alongside of each other is all I could ask for!

My art has inspired me to strive for greatness and to push myself harder than I ever have. I want to help inspire other people to create with their entire being. It brings a joy to my life to see that everyone inspires everyone. I hope that one day my art will transcend and in turn, helps others find the same light I have found. We’re all drifting in the same ocean of consciousness together. I’m grateful to be experiencing the beauty of life alongside of the most talented people I know. Sea The Spirit is more than just a collective, it’s more than all the hard work. This collective is ever-changing and growing. My dream is to give everyone a loving place to exist and to create! I feel like creating an open place for creators, friends, and family was my calling in life! I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride from the get go. It takes a lot of work and soul to get out there every day trying to be the change I want to see in the community. I’ve had a lot of setbacks- a lot of disheartening lessons I needed to experience as a business owner and with running a larger collective. It gets overwhelming a lot of the time but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every struggle and every not so great thing that has pushed back has made me stronger and has helped me be that support for others when they feel down and out and at a loss.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So I specialize in visionary art- mostly related to my indigenous roots and from the teachings I’ve collected throughout my life. If you see my art- you know that’s “Sea The Spirit” I use a wide range of colors, a full rainbow spectrum, I do very methodical pieces- very geometric- or even more go with the flow type of art. But there is always a message to be learned in everything I paint. Did my painting resonate with your soul? Did I wake something up inside of you when you looked at a piece of mine. Have you seen this in a dream before? My goal is to show everyone what spirit sees.

The reason why I have always wanted to share my art with people is because of how I’ve used art in my own personal healing process. I was searching for the answers to life’s questions, and in return I truly found myself. I sought out a new version of myself and for the first time, I feel as if I am living and understanding how to convey my art in a more meaningful way. My ever-expanding awareness of everything around me inspired the creation of my brand Sea The Spirit. It is my own way of representing how my third eye perceives reality. What I see myself meshed with what my subconscious self experiences through my eyes. I feel as if I finally have come to realize how to portray what I’ve seen for years. What lies underneath the reality is actually more mesmerizing than anything we could create to represent it.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I would love it if people could just help us find local businesses that could use some art to help promote their businesses. I try to do nonprofit and charity work so I like to donate my time and paintings/ mural work for communities. Sometimes I even get enough people that want to come and help create the murals as well.

We do take donations to help pay for our materials or even if you want to offer a hand and come help for a day!

I do offer other services directly related to vending coordinating/ live painting/ or art commissions as well.

  • Commissions- range from $350-$5,000
