Conversations with Kayla Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Thompson.

Hi Kayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been pursuing music for around 6 -7 years now and it has been a journey of self-discovery and major personal growth. I grew up in a musical family but I was very afraid of singing in front of people. I finally started overcoming my fear, doing open mics and writing music. And I have specifically written a lot about those fears and overcoming them. When I was 19, I went to see Tori Kelly perform live and felt so inspired. It was more than just a great performance but she was affecting people and ministering to them. I had never seen that outside of church. I remember getting in my car and just repeating, “That’s what I want to do.” So I left college, started my journey and began releasing my own original music. I quickly learned that comparison is a killer. I never dealt with self-doubt or comparison until I started doing music. It took me a while to just find my own voice or my own sound because I was constantly looking at what other artists were doing. Now after 6 years or so I have been working on myself and gaining confidence in who I am as an artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only thing I would add is that social media can be a blessing and a curse. It has lifted my self-esteem and then other times it worsened my issue with the comparison. I also experienced lulls with my engagement with social media and so that has been tough to bounce back from or work through.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an indie artist and I love songwriting the most. I have gotten to write for other artists on top my own music, which has been amazing. I think what sets me apart is that I am able to write songs across different genres.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like Atlanta a lot! Whenever I have visited it always feels to creative and colorful with so much culture. The only thing is that there’s a lot of traffic in Atlanta.
