Daily Inspiration: Meet Jhazmin Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhazmin Thomas.

Hi Jhazmin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a professional makeup artist, licensed esthetician, and bridal makeup mentor!

I started my makeup journey back in 2012! How I fell into makeup is quite interesting. I was 20 years old with a newborn baby and postpartum had a hold on me! I didn’t feel like myself or even recognize myself when I looked into the mirror. I was so desperate to look like “somebody” other than myself that I called a friend of mine who was a makeup artist at the time and begged her to take me to the store to get some makeup. We headed off to the store and once we got back to my house, we dumped out all the makeup, and she proceeds to give me a tutorial in my bathroom. I FELT LIKE SOMEONE AGAIN. So I began indulging hard into youtube while my newborn was asleep and continued to learn how to perfect my makeup application.

A few months later, a lady from my church asked if I could do her daughter’s wedding makeup and I politely declined on four different occasions, lol. The 5th time she asked, I finally said yes! Once I did the makeup, I posted pictures on my Facebook JUST TO SHOW what I had accomplished. Shortly after I started getting a ton of requests to do makeup to the point, I AM HERE AS A MAKEUP ARTIST 10 YEARS LATER! lol

What’s funny about this story is that I didn’t mention, I had JUST dropped out of college right before I had my daughter and I had no clue where my life or career was going! So I found my career in a dark place that turned into years of beautiful light!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur hasn’t been an easy road by any means! There has been so much I’ve had to figure out by simply making mistakes but when your an entrepreneur, it almost seems as if you’re not allowed to make those mistakes. Navigating entrepreneurship can cost thousands of dollars with little to no income coming back in. There has been plenty of times that I wanted to quit completely. There has been so many highs and lows in my career as a makeup artist. Finding my way in the beauty world has truly been a journey. There are months where opportunities are abundant and there are months where the phone doesn’t ring. Being that I started as a makeup artist when social media was so new, that in itself has been a challenge with learning this social media world, how to market, how to use social media to create opportunities, how to network etc. Social media went from this fun place to post your work to a whole money making magnet! And if you’re not careful, you can find yourself angry, frustrated, discouraged, and depressed.

I am so grateful that each experience I’ve had is now helping woman across the globe and the ladies who sit in my chair! It keeps me working hard, it keeps me grounded, and grateful to God that he allowed me to be here today!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician with ten years of experience.

I have a makeup studio located in Duluth. I am also the salon suite owner of AJU Salon Lofts, where I get to host a beautiful luxury space for other beauty professionals to run their businesses.

I specialize in bridal makeup artistry and my esthetic is soft glam.

I am known for being “Your Bridal Business Bestie” and helping bridal mua’s build successful systems to confidently book premium brides. I get to mentor other bridal artist in the industry and help them navigate through some of the industry woes!

I am the originator and creator Vibrant Bridal Glam! Over the summer, I felt myself pretty much doing the same makeup looks on my brides (the gold, the silver, and champagne bridal looks). I also felt like a lot of my brides were getting these kinds of looks because it felt like that is what they were “supposed to look like” instead of us creating a look that fits the brides personality!

I wanted to push the boundaries of bridal makeup and encourage brides to try something new! I started incorporating modern pops of color into my bridal makeup looks to take it up a notch and it has been a hit! I have been able to create and teach these techniques so that other bridal artists are comfortable with using color when it comes to bridal makeup!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When finding a mentor or coach, it is important that the mentor can assist with your pain points, shares your values, challenges you, guide you, expands your perspective, and most importantly someone who wants to see you win! It won’t matter to them if you’re “more” successful than them!

Networking, you can use some of those same tips!
