Daily Inspiration: Meet Karen Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Karen Johnson Davis.

Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve had the best of times in my life because of my decision to move to Atlanta. Since moving in 1997 from Louisville, Kentucky, the Derby City where I was born and raised, I have no regrets. Atlanta embodies a drive and hunger for success like few other places. It’s seeing accomplished people who look like me, connected AND thriving for me. My newest venture is PeriSteam Atlanta, an Alternative & Holistic Wellness practice in Ellenwood, Georgia. I’m Dr. Karen J. Davis, PFc, PHIC, Atlanta’s premiere PeriSteam hydrotherapy practitioner. As a woman who has overcome common reproductive health challenges, I was introduced to PeriSteam Hydrotherapy in 2018. Also known as Yoni Steaming or V-Steaming, PeriSteam hydrotherapy is a therapeutic treatment I want to share in the women’s health community. My journey as a wellness entrepreneur began well before I ever knew it was happening. After the birth of my twins in 2000, I began experiencing reproductive health issues so many women stare down daily. You know those cramps that completely disrupt your life, interrupting your ability to be the best mom, best friend, best sister, best partner, best daughter, best entrepreneur, best professional…well, the best you on any day? Ultimately, I consented to the advice of my physician and underwent a partial hysterectomy in 2016. My experience is not unique. While everyone’s results are different, regular Yoni Steaming has eliminated many of the recurring reproductive health concerns that surfaced post-surgery. This includes night sweats and hot flashes, which I affectionately refer to as the devil inside. Through Yoni Steaming, women can reclaim our sanity when our lady parts are running the show. Women have a professional sister friend and partner in your certified specialist at PeriSteam Atlanta.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. The road to entrepreneurship has not been smooth. I’m not a stranger to starting a business as I’ve had multiple businesses in various industries from real estate to travel. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. A major challenge was deciding on a profitable and sustainable business venture doing what I love and helping others. The process from where I began to where I am today was difficult, quick or straightforward. I’ve had to learn from: – the constant personal and professional sacrifices I make – losing a dear friend, – being misled and taken advantage of by an irresponsible business partner, – multiple obstacles along my Doctoral of Marketing journey, – managing my roles as mother, CEO and employee, – and having more personal and professional challenges than I can count. Because of my resilience, I’ve become an unapologetic cheerleader for myself, 24/7/365 because no one else can support my vision better than me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As my professional and personal life has integrated, I want to keep learning how I can do life better and run a smarter business. I am an alumnus of the University of Kentucky where I earned a degree in Business Administration/Marketing and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated in 1988. I later earned my Masters of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University; successfully became a candidate for a Doctorate Degree in Marketing; and have received honorary recognition as a Doctor of Wellness Studies, honoris causa degree, for my commitment to the wellness studies field. My practice is the first and only Holistic Women’s Health practice in the nation to become a provider for AmeriPlan; a discount health plan. For most of my future and current customers of Blue Cross Blue Shield Anthem, we can accept your insurance as well. We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes! On one hand, it’s odd to see the world come to a standstill because of COVID-19. What I appreciate being reminded of most is you cannot replace family, friends or time. I feel for those who have lost loved ones. I’m equally humbled and grateful for not having felt the loss of anyone I love because of COVID-19. During the Pandemic, I’m rethinking how important self-care is for survival. If you were to ask me how best to describe my life canvas, well, I’d tell you to stick around for the journey. I’m still painting. (Smiling)
