Daily Inspiration: Meet Triesta Wiggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Triesta Wiggins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been active in the healthcare field since 2004. I graduated from Columbus Technical College 2 days before my high school graduation from George Washington Carver High School in Columbus, GA. I knew I wanted to further my career in healthcare but college is expensive! The balance between working full time, attending classes and simply living and enjoying life was hard! But then I signed up for an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic program at a trade school and it changed my life. My instructor and mentors were beyond helpful, the course was challenging and affordable. In 2014, I became a licensed Paramedic and it opened many doors in my field. In 2020 like the rest of the world, Covid changed my life. In July of 2022, I got sick and slipped into a coma for 58 days. When I awoke, everything was different. I had to relearn how to walk, how to talk and other simple daily activities of life. My thought process was cloudy and honestly, for the first time in my life, I had to rely on the people I had worked with for years. I was a patient. When I got home I was determined and pushed myself. And with God and a loving support system, I was thriving again.

But I still was not 100% my old self. I remember one of the first phone calls I received was Mrs. Shakea Miller, she called to check on me and to let me know that I still had a position as an instructor at 1 on 1 Technical College. So in January 2021, I adapted and went from the front line to the beginning, teaching. I never realized this decision would, once again, change my life. Teaching and watching students develop and learn, then apply what they learned brought me life again. Training the next level of healthcare gave me purpose and joy. And I have 1 on 1 Technical College to thank for this. In April 2022 I advanced my career further by excepting the position of Director to work directly with Shakea Miller and growing our Phenic City, AL location. We have expanded our programs of study and are opening doors and building bridges for more people in the Tri-City (Phenix City, Columbus and Bibb City) are for a nontraditional education. My personal mission is to be able to help others, just as people helped me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been the easiest of journeys but definitely worth it! I’ve had to overcome some physical battles. Covid took away my abilities to physically be as active as I once was. I held on, for a long time, of what I was “use” to or how things were. But now I am more accepting that “this is what I can do and that’s alright” Covid slowed down the enrollment process, but we (1 on 1 Technical College) were able to adapt and promote our online classes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the Director at 1 on 1 Technical College, I try to build bridges. People will tell me “I’m too old for school” or “I don’t have that kind of time anymore” and I show them our courses of study. Show them that our timeline for classes are less than 12 weeks and you can have an entirely new career. Show them our payment plans, to prove Yes, college is affordable! I build bridges between the school and other companies in the community to try to place our newest graduates with jobs. There is no greater feeling in the world than to get a message of a former school wearing their scrubs and smiling saying they started their new position!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
In today’s world, people can take many things from you, but they can never take your education. Growth is uncomfortable but it is absolutely necessary!

  • Online Medical Billing & Coding class $2,000
  • Pharmacy Technician $1,500
  • Certified Medical Assistant $1,500
