Exploring Life & Business with Tefani Williams of Tefani Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tefani Williams.

Hi Tefani, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story is amazing. I started my brand Tefani Boutique in 2017. After sustaining a back injury, working in the nursing field. I needed to find ways to make money until I got back to work. Fashion always been eye-catching for me. So, I decided to start my own business using my name. Because my name is unique itself. I left the nursing field and started working more on my business as I went to school for Pharmacy Technician. During my career as a pharmacy technician, I worked during the day and did pop-up shops at night for my brand. My busiest pop-up shops were every Thursday at Amsterdam Lounge, located in Washington D.C. During that year, I decided to move to Atlanta and start my future over.

Moving to Atlanta was the best thing for me and my son. He’s doing great in school and sports. I’m doing so great in my business. This was the perfect move. In 2019, I made the decision to become a full-time entrepreneur. No more playing around. I had one job to do when I moved here. Which was to grow my business.

In 2019, I moved into a suite inside of Synergy Suites. Located in west midtown. This building helped me grow so much in the last two years. During the pandemic in 2020, I moved to a bigger space within the building. I revamp the lounge room into a full clothing store. This journey was a game-changer for me. I saw what I could do and I was ready for more. Late 2020, I signed a contract to my 1st store-front in the DMV area (Maryland). My store is located in my city where I grew up. It feels so good to bring my business back home and create jobs for the community. Tefani Boutique hosts pop-up shops with local vendors. I do a limited of consignment items. From other local brands to help bring awareness.

In 2020, I started to teach classes on how to start your own clothing business. Within that year, I helped over 100 students start their business. Some students travel to participate in my one on one classes. Giving back and helping others win motivates me everyday. Praying that things get better during these trouble Covid-19 times. I’m sponsoring a trip to LA with my students. I want them to feel the emotions when shopping with the vendors in person.

After growing my brand in Synergy Suites for two years. I felt that it was time to close that chapter. I saw what I could do as a business owner and brand. In 2021 mid summertime, I closed down my store. But, the good news is next! In August, I signed a contract for my 2nd store-front located in Riverdale, GA. This space is 2,400sqft, four times bigger than my store in the DMV area. I cried tears of joy. Planning to opening up November 1st, right on time for the holidays. My journey is not over yet and I can’t wait to tell you guys more. Stay tuned…..

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Nope! Yes, there were good times but also bad ones. As a business owner, you are always learning. During the pandemic, although I relocated my store space. I also lost a lot of sales. This was a groundbreaking time for me. With no foot traffic and online sales slow. I had to figure it out. That’s when I started my Boutique Boss class online. Which turned out to be the best thing for my brand.

Dealing with property managers for these properties can be a lot as well. I advise anybody who invests in a storefront to stay firm but respectful when dealing with errors.

My Store in the DMV area (Maryland), A/C went completely out. Which caused my floors to pop up. Flooring costs a lot of money. Just buying the materials alone. Thankfully, after discussing with the property managers, my A/C was fixed for free and my flooring was repaired as well at no additional cost.

There’s much more, but I appreciate those times of challenge because it’s a teachable moment for all parties involved. Running a business isn’t easy. There will always be Obstacles/Challenges.

Tefani Boutique gives a unique selling experience. We want every customer leaving our store happy with memory of how we catered them. My online website shows our creativity side. We want our audience to see and feel the energy through the screen. The brand is known for having unique pieces. Our motto is “Dare To Be Different”. We make sure we stick to that as well. We don’t re-stock items because we want our customers feeling special with our newest arrivals.

Tefani Boutique helps bring awareness to other business. Which makes me very proud. To be a part of our community growth as entrepreneurs. I select a few brands every year to do consignment pieces with my store.

Seeing my customer’s happiness in my merchandise makes me happy. I am providing memories for them. Whether it’s for a girl’s night out or wedding. My selection of fashion brings light to the room they step in. Hearing the great feedback from our customers always brings joy and passion with my brand. It’s one reason why I continue to stick to our motto ‘Dare To Be Different”.
