Hidden Gems: Meet Kanita Braxton of KB’s Virtual Assistant Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanita Braxton.

Hi Kanita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, I can say that I did not have an easy journey. As a child, I moved around a lot and had to deal with most challenges of a child in an urban environment. After graduating from high school, I knew I needed a fresh start and moved to Delaware to complete my undergraduate degree; as life does it, it created an extra hurdle as I became pregnant with my first daughter during my junior year. Not sure how this would play out, I knew I had to create a better life for my daughter which gave me the motivation to complete my undergraduate degree all while working two jobs and going to school full time. During this time, many people told me my life was over and I will never graduate because I had a daughter, so I felt it in my heart to give back to my community and started “Her Generation Foundation” which was a community-based organization to create a safe space for young moms and ladies to thrive. God saw fit to bless me with my second daughter which I didn’t know I was pregnant during my graduation.

With two little girls that looked up to me gave me even more motivation and I went back to school and completed my graduate degree while working full-time as a recruiter for one of the most recognized private security companies in the world in as little as 10 months. My career started to blossom after completing my graduate degree and I was offered a recruiter position back in my home city and in as little as four years, I have been promoted three times. As I acquired new skills, I ventured into the unknown world of virtual assistance. I have taken my skills and talent in organization and social media management and turned it into a thriving business in less than one year in business. I currently have clients in three major cities. At the same time, my need to be involved in my community has propelled Her Generation Foundation to now Her Youth Project which in 2022 became a recognized non-profit organization serving the Delaware, DC, Maryland and Virginia areas.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe in this day in age, anyone has a smooth road. Growing up in an urban city, there are many challenges that you have to overcome. I had to deal with an underfunded school system that at times were overpopulated, so teachers could not give the proper attention each child deserves. For most inner city kids, you just have to figure it out. I would also say the pandemic didn’t help a lot, but it taught me a lot of valuable lessons. One lesson I learned when I had a fear that I would be unemployed is to become resourceful, which led me to the world of entrepreneurial ship. During the pandemic, I started an online children’s clothing boutique called M&M boutique, I also sold other products until I launched KB Virtual Assistant Services. The entrepreneurial life has been a roller coaster of emotions but it has been worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
KB’s Virtual Assistant Services is known for our Social Media Management, Email Marketing, and Administrative Assistance. My organizational and time management skills are out of this world! I honestly enjoy networking and meeting new people. I love watching business owners grow their business with my help!

I am most proud of the fact that my brand has made a name for itself in such a short period of time. I have only been in business for eight months and have had more than ten clients! It’s so amazing having people that want to work with ME!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
There are several things that I have learned on my journey, but to highlight key items I would say don’t let fear stop you from pursuing your passion. Far too often, we let fear get in the way of our success, or the fear of what others say won’t work. Just because it did not work for them does not mean it won’t work for you. As Steve Harvey once said, God gave you the vision, he did not give it to others. Another piece of advice would be don’t look for friends and family to support your business. As most business owners have found out, your biggest supporters will come from people you don’t know. And finally, NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. My biggest gains in my business has come from networking with the right people. I am often reminded that “Your NETWORK is your NETWORTH.

One thing I wish I knew when I was first starting out was that I should not spent so much time on making sure everything was perfect before I got started. At the end of the day, there is no perfect business plan. The most important commodity we have is time, and I wasted a lot trying to be perfect before I got started. So if you have a dream, passion or vision, just get started and everything will turn out ok. I just want to leave this one quote with you that I have in my office to remind me of how I got to where I am today
