Today we’d like to introduce you to The Carmen J.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
At 22 years old, I was working for a nonprofit doing a job that I absolutely loved but the environment was not the best environment for me. In that moment, I had to decide whether or not I was willing to make certain sacrifices for the love of the job or choose myself and walk away knowing I would potentially lose everything. After months of deliberating, I finally decided to take the biggest risk of my life and walked away from the job. Walking away from that job gave me the space and opportunity to take the time to figure out what I really wanted to do. The idea of having my own company was born while I was studying Political Science at Auburn University in the fall of 2018, but it wasn’t until April of 2020 that I decided to take a leap of faith and start this business from literally nothing. I had a printer, heat press, shirts, and paper, and from there, my dream became a reality. Of A Higher Frequency was born two months later!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that the road has not been smooth, but it hasn’t been completely rocky. Sure I have to do everything on my own, I’ve had to adjust my methods of production multiple times and learn new skills that were difficult in the beginning, but I see those things as being apart of the journey. Having a business involves a lot of trial and error as well as learning new things. Growing is important in having a business. The struggles are all apart of the process and I am grateful for every moment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Of A Higher Frequency?
Of A Higher Frequency is a custom apparel brand giving a voice to those who have yet to see themselves properly represented in the fashion industry, artistry, & creative community. You can create your own clothing and accessories with Of A Higher Frequency. I aim to increase the frequency in other people’s lives by providing more than just clothing. When you purchase from Of A Higher Frequency, you are engaging in an experience. I am dedicated to ensuring the lives of every human includes clean clothes on their backs. That is why every time a shirt is purchased, I will give a shirt to a homeless person living on the streets of Atlanta, GA. I have also used my brand as a platform to improve the lives of others.
In November of 2020, I decided to give back in a major way. I did a fundraiser for my homelessness drive. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing community around me that donated over $1,000 to my cause. I was able to produce 60 shirts, 60 toiletry bookbags, and 60 meals for 60 people in Atlanta, GA. In December 2020, I adopted a family for the holiday season and provided 30 gifts for three kids and gave the mother a $350 gift card. I have to thank my community for believing in my vision and being so generous. My goal is to ensure that every person has access to clothing regardless of their socioeconomic background, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
