Inspiring Conversations with Jason Howard of M37 MGMT / NLS Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Howard.

Hi Jason, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in music as a fan, artist and engineer. I was an artist strictly for the love of music. I had a full analog studio in my bedroom when I was 16, this sounds pretty normal now with the way studios have been reduced to computer programs. In ’99 and ’00, having a full studio in a bedroom with all of the components that were needed was rare to see. Me recording myself and my friends led me to the engineering side of music, that led me to recording neighborhood artists as part of a mixtape series that was started with my childhood friend DJ Mal J.

My reintroduction to music and introduction as M37 Jase came after an eight years hiatus. Through mutual friends, I started hanging around some independent artists in Atlanta. Tagging along with them and seeing a lot of the Atlanta music scene made me think that there was a better way for them to market themselves besides performing in the club every week. That led to the start of Next Level Sounds (NLS) Playlisting, Marketing and Promotions company along with my childhood friend Jamal “JD” Davis. Roughly a year after starting NLS, M37 Management was formed as a way to provide artists a more detailed and strategic approach to release rollouts and marketing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve cherished every bump in the road on this journey, the road has been as smooth as I’ve made it. My struggles have been mostly self-inflicted, growing and expanding faster than my bandwidth or staff resources can handle. Of course, struggles came along with managing promotional campaigns or artist’s careers, but issues with dealing with people and personalities have to be expected.

We’ve been impressed with M37 MGMT / NLS Marketing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the CEO of both M37 Management and Next Level Sounds Marketing. M37 is an artist management firm specializing in handling the careers of recording artists and producers. M37 has also entered into the event throwing and branding arena. NLS serves as the Marketing arm for M37, it handles the marketing for all M37 clients as well as individual customers who may not be ready for the full Management package.

M37 has had a fantastic 2020 and 2021, garnering three deals for its clients from great independent distribution companies. NLS has been on a tear the last two years, gaining over 2.4 million streams for playlisting clients and 1.7 million streams for its distribution clients.

I’m most proud of the way we’ve been able to navigate through this music landscape without any chart, guide or assistance. We had no knowledge of the digital side of the music industry more than six months before starting our journey. We started with our own capital, no handouts. We’ve had two very successful years and fully expect to continue to grow at a 20% clip year over year.

Between both companies, we offer client management, promotion, marketing (social media included but not limited to), brand endorsements, content creation, playlisting, project management, event planning and itinerary management.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe that for the most part, luck is manufactured. Good luck is a product of consistency, dedication and putting yourself in the right rooms. Bad luck can be a product of being unfocused, lazy and not motivated to step out of the box and work on your life. Misfortunate events that are out of your control can happen and should be expected to some degree. But ultimately, you have to stay firm and committed to your goal to the best of your abilities.
