Inspiring Conversations with Kamila Benjamin-Smith of KrownedbyKam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamila Benjamin-Smith.

Hi Kamila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hair braiding was always my first passion. The creativity and uniqueness of each braided style always amazed me. I first started braiding when I was about ten years old. My sisters were my very first mannequins. As I grew older, my fascination grew as well. I started watching YouTube videos on how to complete braids with extensions. I practiced on anyone who was willing to let me braid their hair. Shortly after I got my first client. After a few more clients I was ready to launch my business KrownedbyKam. I officially launched KrownedbyKam in the Virgin Islands on May 13, 2020 and it took off. In August of 2021, my husband and I relocated to Georgia and I continued braiding hair. I’m excited for this new journey with KrownedbyKam and meeting new clients!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. When the pandemic hit, it definitely slowed things down for my business. It was very difficult to get products, beauty supply stores were closed because they were not considered essential. During that time I looked on the bright side of things. I started focusing more on the administrative part of my business and got my business license and worked on my branding.

As you know, we’re big fans of KrownedbyKam. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a female-founded business that aims to help women look and feel beautiful about themselves. I also believe that feeling beautiful shouldn’t cost you an arm and leg. I find joy in seeing my clients smile, it’s more than making money for me. It’s about seeing my creation come to life and making people feel good.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for anyone that’s just starting out is to be patient. It may seem hard and difficult at times but don’t get discouraged. Remain humble and motivated and eventually, everything will work out.
