Life and Work with Julia Spinolo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Spinolo.

Julia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in the South Metro Atlanta area. After losing my mother to cancer the week before I started my first year of college, I chose a career in healthcare. While juggling three jobs, I completed my bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1997. As a registered nurse, I worked in medical-surgical, psychiatry, and oncology units. I’ve always had the drive to learn. In 2001, I completed my master’s degree in nursing and became a family nurse practitioner. A few years later, I became an Assistant Professor of Nursing and eventually completed my Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2007. Life was good, with a wonderful husband, a beautiful home and a distinguished career. Then, something stopped me in my tracks. In May 2015, at the age of 42, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. For almost 20 years, I had seen and comforted patients given that diagnosis. At that moment, I truly felt the enormity of receiving such news. Roles were switched; I was the patient instead of the healthcare provider. While going through months of chemotherapy and several surgeries, I received a few energy healing sessions. My side effects were not quite as bad as those of other patients receiving the same regimen. I didn’t credit the energy healing for suffering less than my peers, but I thought, “well, maybe it’s helping some.”

After treatment, I developed chemo brain which left me feeling foggy headed and forgetful. I couldn’t shake it. Months went by, I thought, “well, let’s try this energy healing again.” And within days, I felt like myself. I could process my thoughts clearly and my memory was better. I continued with energy healing treatments and got back to being me. I was sold. I thought, if I could go to school all these years and have all these degrees, I know I can learn how to do this. So, I did. After several months of study, I became a Reiki Master. I decided that I wanted to solely work as an energy healer because of the impact this work had on my life and I wanted to give that to others. In July 2017, I started my own Reiki practice, Centered Self and I’ve worked with clients all over the world. I am amazed every single time I work with my clients and how they progress in becoming their best self. It’s fascinating stuff and now growing research supports this work.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not smooth. Yet, our biggest struggles are our most valuable learning opportunities. One of my lifelong issues involved crossing paths with bullies. They broke my spirit, affected my self-esteem, and made me question my dreams, my path, and my worthiness. “Was I good enough?” I wondered many times in my life. Throughout these experiences, I’ve learned to get out of the victim mode, step back and ask, “What is the lesson here? What is this person/situation teaching me?” My advice for young women who are just starting their journey is asking these questions when faced with adversity. And here’s the key, show gratitude. What I mean by this, is to forgive and to show gratitude for these learning opportunities. You’ll be amazed at how you grow from doing this.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Centered Self – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a Reiki Master providing reiki/energy healing to clients face to face and remotely. I’m proud that I can help people in different ways on their path towards wellness across the globe. I’m unique because I’m an energy worker with a medical background. I integrate Eastern and Western medical philosophies, show how they truly complement each other and use this knowledge to help facilitate the healing process for my clients.

Who have you been inspired by?
My mother for showing me how much fun life can be and how to find humor in any situation. Iyanla Vanzant for showing me the importance of setting boundaries and developing the habit of self-work. Brene Brown for giving me the courage to be my authentic self.

A very interesting interview Julie. Of course I enjoyed hearing you speak of your precious Mom. She is in Heaven smiling down at her beautiful and successful daughters. I love you.
