Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshia White.
Keshia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Website & Brand Designer for women entrepreneurs. I started designing websites as a blogger five years ago. I wasn’t happy with my job at the time, and I was searching for a fun hobby to use my creativity. I was in the most ‘uncreative’ day job, working in corporate sales in the telecom industry. Starting the blog helped me discover a passion for design because I was more into making my website look good than I was blogging. I decided to work on a career transition, and I started taking evening courses in web and visual design. I did freelance work for entrepreneurs on the side of my sales jobs for a few years and I eventually transitioned into taking my website and brand design business full time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My main struggle was balancing my day job with building my business on the side. It required a great deal of discipline and determination. I had to do the work, regardless of how I felt, whether I was tired from a long day or frustrated about a toxic work environment–the work was still there and I had to it. I’d often keep my personal laptop in my trunk, so I could drive straight to a coffee shop after my day job to work on my business in the evenings. I put many hours into developing my skills and marketing myself online before I took the leap to run my business full time.
The actions required to build a business aren’t necessarily hard to do, but it just requires a level of discipline and commitment to yourself. My advice to women is to choose something that you enjoy and work towards that. If you enjoy what you’re working towards, having the discipline to put in the effort consistently will be SO much easier.
Hold on to your vision for your future and know that with intentional, consistent effort, that vision will become your reality, no matter what anyone else says or thinks about it. It all truly works out for you when you put in the work.
Please tell us about Keshia M. White Designs.
I’m a Website & Brand Designer and I specialize in strategic web design & branding for women entrepreneurs. I’m most proud that I’m able to have an impact on women-led businesses with the work that I do. I love helping them create strategies for their branding, visuals, and websites to help take their businesses to the next level.
To me, design isn’t about just being pretty, it’s about digging into a business’s goals, identifying their ideal clients, and simplifying their business processes. Designing in this way allows me to create websites that serve as strategic business tools to support goals and revenue growth.
Who have you been inspired by?
Myleik Teele has inspired me. Her entrepreneurship story and podcast helped me to believe in the possibility that I could start a business. I didn’t grow up with any business role models or mentors, and in many business spaces, there are few women of color present. So, being able to take in the advice and lessons from Myleik’s podcasts along my journey has been so valuable.
Lisa Nichols also inspires me. Her life story is amazing and she’s the best speaker! One of her speeches on fear helped me get through a tough time of uncertainty time in my life. In that speech, she explains that we should put fear in the backseat and know that we’re ultimately the drivers in control of our lives.
