Life and Work with Kimberly Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Davis.

Kimberly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In the late ’90s, I was a part of a Christian Rap group. I kept a song book and I was always writing songs and poems trying to come up with catchy phrases and acronyms for inspiration. Life happened, the group disbanded, and I went on about my life putting away all of my notebooks full of songs.

Fast forward to 2015 when my sister Dena and I were having a creative writing session, some of my old ideas came back to my mind from years ago. That day, the ideas started flowing and she suggested that I put the sayings on some shirts and sell them. That was a scary thought! I wasn’t prepared to start a business and who would like these crazy sayings but us? People rarely get my sense of humor so it was a nice thought at the time but nothing I thought would really work. Over the years, I ran the idea by many but no one thought that it was a good idea so I kept thinking about it and collecting my thoughts. I finally contacted my friend Richard Glover, a graphic designer, who is the owner of 1906tees. He took my jumbled ideas in my head and on paper and brought them to life! Finally, In 2018, Favored of God Tees was born!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road hasn’t necessarily been smooth but it has come with many challenges. For the industry that I am in, you have to be prepared to switch things up and you can’t be stuck on trying to make an idea work just because you like it. You have to gauge the audience that you are trying to reach and find a trend that people are willing to spend their money on all while keeping your vision clear and authentic.

My advice for any woman young or seasoned in life is to research, research, research! I have spent countless hours doing research on trends, fashion, marketing strategies, and owning a business in general. Know what you’re getting into but don’t be afraid to take that leap!

Seek out mentors who have been successful in doing what you are trying to do. I was blessed enough to find two special people who were willing to take me under their wing to keep me from the pitfalls and failures that they had to experience.

Finally, failure is a part of the journey. You just pick up from where you are and try new strategies until you find the right combination. Just don’t give up on you and your dreams.

Please tell us about Favored of God Tees.
I have never been a “girly-girl” so my favorite thing to wear is t-shirts and jeans for the most part. So, I started out making tees for myself with catchy sayings on them. It really started to spark thoughts that this may actually work when people started asking me where I got my shirts from. I have a Christian faith-based/inspirational line of tees that is the core that got the ball rolling in early 2018. Now, my sarcastic side is coming out more and more as ideas come about. LOL. I currently have about 100 designs available in my store. Some of the categories you will find are funny, workout/exercise, wellness, love, and just all-around positivity.

What I am most proud of as a brand is when I see people in my designs! That is so thrilling! And I’m not talking about my family and friends either. When I get pictures from absolute strangers wearing my designs, it makes me smile on the inside.

We are all unique creatures. Not one of us is the exact same so that sets me apart from others from the start! I spent a major portion of my life trying to be like everyone else not knowing that my differences are what makes me special! So, in a business that is oversaturated, I pride myself on delivering extraordinary service to my customers, creating a memorable culture and brand that people can trust, engaging with my customers personally on all social media platforms, and by offering monthly giveaways and deals. I occasionally make calls to customers to thank them for their support! A simple thank you goes a long way. I also ask the opinions of my customers and take suggestions from them as to what they would like to see from Favored of God Tees. I want them to feel a part of the growing process and I have learned valuable strategies with this method.

Who have you been inspired by?
There are three amazing women who inspire me to be the best form of myself.

The first is my mother Mildred Davis. She is one of the strongest women that I know. She has and still is helping guide me through this thing called life with her brand of wisdom. She is brutally honest so if you don’t really want to know the truth ask someone else! She constantly gives to others without a second thought. And she will make you hurt yourself laughing at her. She is hilarious and we have so much fun together.

Second is the late Dr. Ann. L. Hardman. I met her in my teen years at a time when my life and my mind were all over the place. She helped steer me in the right direction through many years of teaching, love, and being an example that I could follow. She was a fierce businesswoman and wasn’t afraid to take risks. My life will be forever impacted by the time I was able to spend with her.

Last but not least is my big sister Dena Chambliss. I have watched life throw her some serious blows and though wounded, she continued to press forward in spite of how she was feeling. She is incredibly talented in many areas, especially the arts. And she also happens to be my best friend.

I have qualities from all 3 of these extraordinary women and I am grateful to have had them in my life space.
