Life and Work with Kristen Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Anderson.

Kristen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off my career back in 2005 after graduating from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Business Administration – Marketing. I have been in the mortgage business for over 14 years, first in sales, then operations and now back as a Mortgage Loan Originator. Working primarily as a 100% commission, I got to where I am today by my work ethic. Being consistent and overcoming obstacles. I always continued to learn as much as I could within my industry. I am a competitor so I use my competitive nature to push myself to be better each day.

I also do all I do for my 9-year-old son Julian. I have a great mentor, David Ryan, as a veteran in the industry, he has always has been there for me in guiding me and giving me excellent advice.

I, of course, would not be here without the support of my loving mother Angel Basha. Without her, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I also thank all my friends and family who have always supported me along the way. Thank you for the many referrals!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road or journey by any means but I am blessed!

In the beginning stages of my career, we had the “Great Recession of 2008 here in the USA.” This crippled the mortgage and housing industry. I was able to find ways within my employer at that time to move to the operations side. My employer saw how valuable I was as an employee and the numbers I put up so I was able to survive massive layoffs and stick out the hard times until the economy improved.

Maintain a great work ethic, be persistent and your hard work will be noticed! Never give up, ask for advice and always know better days are ahead. Know your worth and show it! Actions speak louder than words.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work for Southeast Mortgage of GA. I am a Mortgage Loan Originator. I help homebuyers with home financing to buy a home. I specialize in conventional, FHA, USDA and VA loans.

I work with clients in completing a thorough loan application, reviewing credit requirements, pre-approving them and then working with them until their loan closes and they are now homeowners!

I love working with 1st-time home buyers and guiding them and advising them through the loan process as it can be overwhelming for many new to the home buying process.

I am proud to say my clients are 100% happy with my customer service. This is what sets me apart from others in my industry. Customer service and ensuring my clients are comfortable with the terms of their loan and process are my #1 priority as well as ensuring the loan closes on time to meet the closing date on the purchase contract.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Get out and do not be afraid to put yourself out there! Be comfortable with you and know you are good at what you do and that confidence will carry over when networking. Make eye contact and stand firm. In my business, which is primarily male-dominated, you have to definitely show confidence.

If you work for a company, do not be afraid to reach out to those who are doing well, who have been in the company for a long time or anyone you feel may have valuable information or advice to give you. Trust me, most veterans in almost industry like when people newer to the business reach out to them. Just make sure you stay consistent and let them know you appreciate their help. Even an EVP or SVP or CEO may be willing to mentor you. You never know until you ask.

Do not be afraid! This is what has worked best for me.
