Life and Work with Parthena Stokes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Parthena Stokes.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Thank you, God, for ordering my steps!!!!!! In 2011, I was pregnant, broke, busted, and didn’t know how to trust myself. I was overweight (265) and my skin color was disappearing (vitiligo), I decided since I had no control over my skin condition, I would drop my weight and make show off my beauty (fuck it two tears in a bucket). With my second baby on the way, I needed a better source of income, my mother was and still is a Master Cosmetologist, she needed help in her salon one weekend and I have never left. I worked unlicensed for five years and I hit a wall of boredom. In the hair industry, the proper credentials can boost or drown your career. I wanted more so I humbled myself and attended cosmetology school, where I was the only adult in a classroom full of children (hell on wheels). I am now a licensed cosmetologist. There was still something missing from my life, a self-inflicted joy. As my clientele grew, I started servicing artist of all types. A good friend of mine and a client (@QUAKE) asked me to shoot for a painter (@sheisdizzy), when I viewed the photos, I found my joy. I named my joy 2tonepot. I’ve been modeling since last year and this has been everything too and for me. When I’m in front of the camera, I become a superhero saving and showing the world that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have struggled with my vitiligo, weight, self-esteem, outsiders perception of myself, these are everyday hurdles, so I move accordingly and always be and speak the TRUTH.
Remember that you are with GOD, walk and know that you can speak life into any situation.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed natural hair stylist/plus-size model.
I’m known for growing hair/and my fearlessness.
I specialize in LOC maintenance and COLOUR.
I’m most proud of myself for being dedicated, determined, dependable to and for my children (JuDonn age 11, M’kaihya age seven) all this is to make sure that they are ready for the world.
My drive and ambition sets me apart from the rest, lol, and I forgot to mention my spots (giggles).

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel as women, we can and have the same opportunities as men. You have to decide if you’re going to play the game or let the game play you and in most situation, can perform better than a man. Our bodies have the ability to birth life, we are GODs in the making…
