Life and Work with Teljer Liburd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teljer Liburd.

Teljer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am blogger-in-chief at Living Life to the T, a lifestyle blog that is all about finding joy and adventure in everyday life. I am known among friends as someone who is vibrant, adventurous and full of life! And why not – life is meant to be enjoyed! My blog is a space for me to share the adventures that I’m up to and to inspire others to find joy and adventure in their own lives too.

I started my blog about a year ago (I recently celebrated my 1 year “blog-iversary”!) and it has been so much fun. I started blogging because I love telling stories, and I always seem to have a funny or interesting story to tell. Here’s a fun fact about my blog: when I first decided I wanted to blog five years ago, I did a Facebook quiz to determine what topics I should blog about. The results said that my life was so interesting that I should blog about life. I thought that was so funny, but then, I quickly realized that the quiz results made a good point. I obviously ran with the idea, LOL. Believe it or not, that became the basis of the vision for my blog: sharing my adventures and how I live life to the fullest, and inspiring others to live their best life too!

Some of the topics I blog about are my world travels, décor/DIY, my favorite brands/products that I recommend, fun activities, or even routines that help me find better work/life balance. For example, I’ve traveled to 32 countries and I have so many fun stories and tips from those trips that I want to share. I am also super creative. For example, I can re-imagine a piece of furniture into something completely different. Side note: I started doing DIY projects when I was in college because I had expensive taste, but I didn’t have the budget to match. So, I found myself being creative with my space; I realized that it was a gift and that I should share my creativity with the world with the hopes that someone else could find value in it as well.

My blog became the space where I could share all things me. I love taking readers/followers on my journey of everyday moments. I truly believe that God intends for us to live full, abundant lives. I plan on enjoying every moment – come and let’s adventure together!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took me almost five years to start my blog. I knew that I wanted to blog about life and adventure, but I didn’t know exactly what topics I would talk about or how I would inspire people by talking about them. I just didn’t know how or where to start. So, fear and perfectionism left me in paralysis. Eventually, I came to the realization that my vision for my blog was no good just in my head. My whole goal was to share my life’s adventures so that I could inspire others to live more abundant lives. And I couldn’t do that if I didn’t start so that I could bring those things to life.

So, I took the practical steps towards the beginning, such as purchasing a website domain, designing my webpage (which I did myself, by the way) and putting my first pieces of content on the blog. Before I knew it, I was having fun and enjoying the process. Once I let go of the need for perfectionism, I felt so liberated. I made a deal with myself that I would aim to put my best work out there and that would be my standard, and not perfectionism.

To my surprise, people were inspired by my stories and posts, even in moments in which I judged my work as not “perfect” enough. It was so rewarding when people would respond to one of my posts with “I really needed to hear that!” or “you’ve inspired me to work on a DIY project” or “you’ve inspired me to take an international trip for the first time.” That type of feedback really touches my heart, and I love it! And THAT is why I do what I do!

There are many other people like me out there who have the vision to begin something great but are trapped by perfectionism. My advice would be to just start. Do it afraid. Take the leap of faith. We all know Rome wasn’t built in a day. If you start small, you can iterate and make your work progressively better. Be sure to give yourself some grace in the journey.

Please tell us about Living Life to the T.
I truly love to inspire and encourage others. One thing that makes my blog unique is that it is what I like to call an “inspirational lifestyle” blog. Meaning, that I’ll slip in some nuggets of faith and positivity in there. My faith is central to my life, so I can’t help but exude that! Plus, there is so much negativity on the internet already, and I just want to be a ray of light. As I mentioned previously, I am proud when I see the impact that I’m making in people’s lives. When someone says that my post encouraged or inspired them, I get all the feels. It truly makes my day. I love when I can motivate others to try something new or adventurous, but uplifting someone’s soul and encouraging them – that’s on a whole other level. And that’s what I aim for.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The toughest thing about blogging today is that it is a saturated field. Everyone and everything on the internet is vying for your attention. There are just so many bloggers out there, even lifestyle bloggers specifically. To me, the key to standing out is authenticity. When I share my content, my goal is to be as transparent and authentic as possible. I always want my personality to jump off the page. Regardless of who else is blogging, I’m just going to be me. I speak to my audience and that’s all I can do. Staying true to myself has helped build my brand as a blog and I feel like people recognize my voice/brand when they see it because it comes through in my writing, in my pictures, and in my videos.
