Life & Work with Kendall McCann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall McCann.

Hi Kendall, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Self-expression through creating has always been my first language, it wasn’t until about a year ago that I seriously decided to follow that path. Having explored other career options that didn’t elicit my fullest passion and purpose, I realized I was put here to do my thing, not someone else’s. In 2018 I was studying graphic design and took a gap semester to travel. I used art as a means of work exchange at some hostels and surf camps and that’s when I painted my first murals! The next couple of years found me being pulled back and forth between my heart’s desire and what was deemed the right or practical route to follow. In 2020 I used spray paint for the first time and fell in love. Towards the end of that year I was like, “Ok, I really just want to paint for a living. Let’s do this.” I noticed the more I aligned with my being and where I resonate as a sovereign entity, the more I aligned with my passion and purpose as an artist, and vice versa. For me, there is not much else greater than connecting inwardly to a force greater than myself and co-creating those visions into reality. I feel so blessed to live my life in communion with my creative flow. Every day is a gift. I’m just following my soul’s instructions. I’m so grateful for all who appreciate what I create and support my life’s calling.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Early last year in the midst of a lot of life changes, I experienced the loss of my boyfriend at the time. It was like my whole life was unraveled all at once in every way. Art in many forms saved me during that time, along with the deep understanding that all we have is right now. Walking through that darkness, the light of “presence” was illuminated. Like streetlights coming on, a new path of healing became clear to me. There was this pivotal moment where I thought “you can either deal with this in an unconscious destructive way or you can become an alchemist of ascension”. My purpose with everything I was doing really changed after that. Is what I put into the world raising the collective? Or is it further adding to the illusion of separateness? Building myself back up from the ground, I realized it doesn’t matter how successful I am; if I’m putting the act of “doing” above my state of “being” it is futile. Success is longevity in health, connection, love, purpose, and peace. Once you get that straight, all the other elements fall in line as byproducts. I’m grateful that I could reprioritize those things before getting too deep in. Obstacles are opportunities waiting to be catalyzed. The growing pains are uncomfortable, but when you choose faith in the face of doubt…that’s when the Universe knows you’re ready. You are always exactly where you need to be, and what’s meant for you will always find you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the moment, you can find me working on murals and paintings for clients and myself. My projects have been commercial, residential, small business, indoor, outdoor, up high, and down low. I also love volunteering on community art projects or helping out fellow muralists. My work is usually colorful and dynamic, aiming to uplift. I want people to tap into something inside, whether that’s a feeling or a knowing. My personal work is overall a meditative exploration of consciousness and my experience as the embodied divine feminine. Everything I make is an extension of myself therefore I try to not define it too much as it’s always changing.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Some of my favorite books are “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, “The Surrender Experiment” by Michael A Singer, and “The Pocket Thich Nhat Hanh”. A great podcast is “Ram Dass Here And Now’. I like the calculator app a lot.
