Life & Work with Xinxun Liao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xinxun Liao.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I come from a large family with four older sisters and one younger brother. Even though we are not rich, we are a loving family. Since I was a child, I have enjoyed painting, but due to the financial situation of my family at the time, I did not have the opportunity to enroll in a painting school. Despite the fact that I was not able to attend art school, my family was very encouraging and supportive. They bought me illustration books, colored pens, and sketchbooks of all kinds. Every time I finished a painting, they would say to me: “You are awesome! The painting is really beautiful.” This way, with the encouragement and support of my family, I was admitted to high school.

In high school, I did not have any drawing foundation at the time, and my classmates were all better than me. Having realized my own inadequacies, I continued to practice the basics of painting. After years of diligent work, I succeeded in getting into a professional art university to study animation. The college has given me the opportunity to learn more about painting techniques and to make many excellent friends. My passion for art never faded as I grew up. I was able to embrace art and systematically study art at Savannah College of Art and Design after graduating from university. Through the SCAD, I met outstanding students from all over the world and gained a deeper understanding of art. Additionally, I gained a deeper understanding of how art affects people. It also made me believe that art can give people more energy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning art is not an easy process. My professor did not support me in high school. I also questioned my own abilities at the time. I am grateful to my parents and siblings for giving me the most encouragement. By my own initiative, I am now studying at SCAD. The most difficult part of my studies is learning the language. As a result, I faced many difficulties during the learning process due to my poor language skills. I have trouble expressing myself, and neither the professor nor my classmates can understand what you are saying. No one is able to help me. My desire to communicate with anyone lasted a long time. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing, afraid of being laughed at. Now, I must face my problems. Keeping up with the language and writing will take time, but I hope I can do it!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a motion designer applying graphic design principles to filmmaking and video production using animation and visual effects. Such as movie clips, trailers, commercials, title sequences, and more. I use visual effects, animation, and other cinematic techniques to take movies, websites, animations, commercials, and more to a whole new level. Currently, I am still learning and like to experiment with various design styles. Therefore, I can continue learning new skills and techniques. I’ve been obsessed with digital graffiti lately, a unique way to interact with art. Artists can create digital graffiti artwork and project it on buildings using virtual reality technology.

It was my pleasure to attend the Digital Graffiti Festival in Alts Beach this year, and I was very lucky to have Bacteria, Tunnel, and Sound of Deep Sea displayed there. Artists from all over the world used the latest digital technology to project original works onto the white walls of Alys Beach. Artists around the world use the latest design, animation, and projection techniques to project moving images onto skyscrapers and other urban structures as a form of artistic expression. Alys Beach’s digital graffiti celebrates and showcases the talents of local artists.

What are your plans for the future?
My future career plans include becoming a good motion designer and working in education. I wish to share my knowledge with students. It would be a pleasure to help more people.

Right now, I plan to complete my dissertation, find a job and get an internship. I look forward to improving in the future and spreading more energy through art.
