Meet Amy Kerr of Porch Sense Candle in Gainesville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Kerr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had love of candles… or obsession. I love the flicker of the flame, the scents that fill my home and calmness it brings me, especially on my porch. My porch is like a sanctuary. It is where my husband and I retreat to after a long day of work and kids (we have 5), gather with friends and family to watch football or have our most meaningful talks. It is the place that makes us happy.

In 2017, this obsession became a hobby and fun way to be creative. I began making candles in my kitchen and sold them to friends and family. An invitation to participate in a local Farmer’s Market offered me a chance to “show off” my stuff for a few weeks. The few weeks turned into the entire summer and an overwhelming response to my candle making hobby.

One fall evening, on our porch, it all made Sense and Porch Sense Candle Co. was born. In a short few months, my hobby has grown into a crazy fun business. I participate in 1-2 markets a month, have corporate accounts, partner with nonprofits to benefit local charities and have my products in 5 retail locations.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Marketing my brand and gaining exposure has been the most challenging thing.

Porch Sense Candle co – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I hand pour 100% soy wax candles in my home. The unique scents and lasting scents are what Porch Sense candles are known for. I think being the sole proprietor… I do every part of this business myself while being a wife and mother of 5 sets me apart from other small businesses.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me seeing my customers happy and excited to receive a Porch Sense Candle as well as providing a high-quality product.
