Meet Angela Hunt of Mounted-Up

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hunt.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Mario and I first worked together 10 years ago collecting cable boxes for Comcast. Shortly after, Mario started doing cable, working for various companies such as Time Warner, Charter, Cablevision, Summit-Broadband and ASC Services. Throughout the process of working for cable companies, as contractors, we faced a lot of obstacles that we had to overcome. Such as, not being paid for jobs, not enough work, not having enough capital and having work assignments inconveniently located. For this reason, it was hard for us to progress in our careers. We continued to experience ups and downs and collectively decided that something had to change. With Mario’s cable experience and my administrative experience, our vision to start our own business was soon going to be a reality for us.

Our first business, Tri-Tek Logistics, was conceived in 2011. I remember finding a Corp-to-Corp contract on Cabl.com in New York for storm work. At that time, we didn’t have a corporation or any workers to our name. But we were determined to get a contract and take a risk. I sent an email expressing our interest, then a phone call was made, resulting in a secured contract. Just like that, we had ourselves our first contract. We immediately created our corporation, Tri-Tek Logistics, LLC. Next, we created an ad searching for cable contractors. Finally, we successfully gained 10 contractors and sent them to work for us in New York. Just when we thought we were on our way, we were blind sighted by financial problems. We had difficulties getting paid, which resulted in delays in paying our workers. This, in particular, was hard for us because we experienced this before but now we were the ones on the other side of the fence. Determined to get our money and pay our guys, we stayed up countless nights reviewing paperwork and brainstorming. After many phone calls and demand letters, we finally got paid and could pay our workers.

Our second contract began with Trinity Telecom, a company that we had a prior business relationship with. First, we started out in Florida, we had 5 workers and an abundance of work orders to fulfill. This area was extremely profitable for us, however, this was a temporary assignment. The next three locations after this were temporary as well but they were not as lucrative. The last location we traveled to was Oklahoma. There was plenty of work there but the amount of money we made in comparison to all the traveling, we never seemed to make ends meet. Then we received a phone call for an opportunity to work back home in Atlanta for Tri-Wire. Without hesitation, we accepted this offer and felt it was advantageous for us to leave and pursue this third contract.

Our third contract with Tri-wire, started out smooth and seemed to be a good business relationship. Work was steady, prices were great and our company was growing. Despite it all, we were plagued with the same issues of the past. Eventually, we stop getting paid, which resulted in a loss of workers and assets. There were bogus claims of missing equipment and anything to deter us from getting paid for the work we completed. Determined to fight for our company, we consulted with an attorney, wrote demand letters and made numerous phone calls to no avail. Consequently, we were forced out and left with no contract. Months later we received a small amount of our capital, which was just enough to pay our technicians. Left with no options, we were forced to sell everything we had just to maintain our livelihood. This experience was a major turning point in our lives. We were depressed, mentally drained and lost all interest in working for another company. From this point forward, we decided to never work for another company again. So, we dissolved Tri-Tek and went back to the drawing board.

Money was tight for us so I eventually went back to work while Mario stayed at home to brainstorm on our next business venture. Every night we sat down and discussed our ideas. Our goal was to form a business using our experience and expertise. Mario was knowledgeable about low voltage and I was knowledgeable about administrative tasks, communication, and customer service. Our combined skills would lead us to create a business that is customer-service oriented and quality- installation focused. Henceforth, the conceptualization of Mounted-UP LLC. We started Mounted-UP in April 2016. On a small budget, together we designed our logo, created our website and business cards. We started marketing through family and friends and on social media. Then once we generated some more capital we quickly invested in advertisement through Thumbtack and Google AdWords. Both marketing tools helped us generate more sales and internet exposure. We went from no calls a day to schedule over 30 appointments per week, and our call volume continues to increase.

Our entrepreneurial journey continues to unfold as we learn from our mistakes and grow our customer base. Despite the ups and down and financial struggles, we continue to work hard and never give up. Our determination and persistence will never end for us and we understand the importance of working hard to achieve our goal. Many individuals dream of starting their own business but are afraid to take a risk and fail. With success comes failures, but those who pick up and keep going will prevail. Mario and I overcame our fears and obstacles and now we have Mounted-UP, a successful online low voltage installation, wiring and repair service business!
