Meet Carlene Bonit of SerKy Consulting in Dacula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlene Bonit.

Carlene, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in the Caribbean island Commonwealth of Dominica and growing up, I remember always having a passion for helping others. I remember back in elementary school helping younger ones get to class or just helping them around the schoolyard. Also, being part of youth groups that focused on helping those in our community the best way we knew how to help drive me towards who I am today. I loved every minute of those moments.

After graduating high school, I really did not know what career path I wanted to take so I floated through jobs that did not bring me much satisfaction. I migrated from Dominica to St. Croix a few years later and started working as a receptionist in a recruiting department and loved it. I figured out then that this was what I was meant to do. Fast forward a few years later and I am still working in roles that put me in direct contact with people and being able to assist them as a sounding board or offering advice and direction whether work/career related or personal.

About a year ago, I decided to put my passion into a business that my focus will be on helping others prepare and find jobs/careers they love.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey of business ownership is not for the faint. Though it has not been easy it has been worth it. Gaining recognition and getting business owners to trust a small business is not easy. I have questioned this walk many times, but I am thankful for a supportive network of family and friends who are standing alongside me helping me move forward.

I have learned a lot in the past year of being in business, I no longer take the rejections personally but use them as a learning tool and use them to my advantage. I have learned to not rely on promises of well-intended people and to be thankful for those who decide to take a chance on me and give me the opportunity to prove myself.

Through it all, I am continuing to push forward, if I can make a difference for one employer or one employee then I have accomplished what I started out to do.

SerKy Consulting – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a boutique staffing agency and we are building a brand that is going to stand out. I say boutique not because we are small but because our approach is different when it comes to filling open positions. Our goal for hiring is not just to plug in a seat but to make sure both employee and employer are a match as close to perfect as possible.

I am most proud that we can sit at the table with larger business and still be noticed. That, among other things gives me the momentum that I need to continue pushing forward and making a difference.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I know from experience that being in the right job makes a world of difference and we want our hires to be happy in their jobs. Using myself as an example, I moved through a few jobs before finding what I loved. Sometimes it is that way but what if we all had someone to help us dig deeper to find what we love. I embrace my journey, I have been a receptionist, analyst, specialist among some but these all led me to the one I enjoyed the most, an Infor Lawson certified Global Human Resources consultant. This job helped me see things from a customer view but also as one providing the service and to see how different both worlds are yet how similar. What each is looking for is someone to come in and guide them to make a difference for their organization.

When I started my business, it was just me doing all the groundwork, my daughter was a huge motivation and helped where she could. I knew what I wanted and how I wanted to present SerKy Consulting. We had to be different.

There are many things I am proud of since I started but I think one of my absolute proudest was getting my business formation paperwork in the mail and knowing that I am a legitimate business owner about to make a difference.
