Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy L. Webb.
Cathy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1997 I became completely bald from Alopecia. My instincts said, “girl grab a wig…quick.” There was no way I was going out in public bald! For the next 16 years, I went between long and medium length dark brown wigs. It was obvious I wasn’t sporting hair from my roots but as long as no one outside of my home saw my scalp, I did not care. On May 27, 2013, my 11-year old dared me to go outside without my wig on. Without any hesitation or fear, I walked out the front door. It was as though I was being told; “This is YOUR time to shine!” No doubt, fear, shame, or other negative emotions came my way! With this, I discovered my mission…to guide women towards living a life created by them; one that allows them to freely express who they are without relying on the opinion of others. This Sisterhood mission is embedded in every conversation held, every book written, and every presentation given.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is no such thing as a “smooth road” in business, or even in life. Challenges always arrive. Preparation helps smooth out the rough parts. For me, the major struggle was internal. I worried people would not want to work with a bald woman, simply because she was bald. This led to hesitation with contacting organizations or not including a photo with proposals. I had to remember that my “bald and free” mantra was what others needed to see. Another struggle was the lack of support from those closest to me. When your path diverges from the expected one, support and encouragement may not be there. There is no one to turn to when motivation wains or you experience a setback. Having to press on without the main support system was (and continues to be) challenging but so necessary.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the YOU, Unlimited story. Tell us more about it.
YOU, Unlimited offers personal development-focused presentations and workshops to female groups and organizations. The presentations focus on: (1) rediscovering your innate self-love, (2) creating the life you want, not the one other’s want for you, (3) discovering how an absentee father impacts his daughter’s life, and (4) realizing true Queenhood. The workshops focus on (1) discovering and living your vision, and (2) being guided by self-confidence. As a company, I am most proud of the impact on young ladies. For example. immediately following a college group presentation, I was invited to give the keynote at their closing ceremony five months later. They were eager to learn more about how to express themselves fully and freely. Being able to eloquently speak on self-confidence is one thing. Being a visual representation of living through your self-confidence is another. This is what sets me and YOU, Unlimited apart.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Currently, the speaking industry is dominated by Caucasian males with several non-Caucasian males at the top. However, there are many women stepping into the speaking arena while those already there are having a greater impact. Despite this, the number of minority female speakers remains small. I see this changing within the next decade.
