Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsei Russell-Roddy.
Chelsei, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The idea of Roddy Apparel began in September of 2018. My brother and I began brainstorming ideas for the look of the brand and putting together mood boards. I would spend most of my time at fabric stores, bringing swatches home to sketch ideas with. We then worked with a designer by the name of Balasse, located downtown, to create two pieces. We provided sketches and in a few weeks, received our final pieces. We released the products on roddyapparel.com on June 28, 2019.
Following the release, I have begun working on Fiction Short Stories and a personal growth blog. I found an extreme love and passion for writing poetry about two years ago, moving to Fiction has been an extremely new and fun experience. I am currently working on three stories to be published. The posts will cover spirituality, personal growth, meditation/prayers, inspiration and everything else in between. I also model for collaborative projects with brands and people of similar vision as myself.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am someone who simply doesn’t believe in a smooth road, we all have our bumps. It’s how we get around them and learn from them that determines our character and strength. The most difficult for me has been the competition. With our generation and social media, things can get cloudy. Staying true to my personal goals and ideas was the hardest part, I had to learn how to control the influence others had on me. I read many books like Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill to broaden my horizon to the truth of success stories. Some days were harder than others but I can honestly say I am now doing my creative work just the way I intend to, and it is so beautiful.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Roddy Apparel – what should we know?
I manage the website, sales and marketing aspects of Roddy Apparel, leaving the designing to my brother, Stephen. For my stories, I begin writing once I wake up. I rarely create an outline, I find it more rewarding to begin the story with an idea or picture in mind and go from there. I am extremely proud of how well I multi-task with my clothing brand and my writing.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It is absolutely essential to have passion in whatever I am doing. Passion and love equate to success, money being the plus. I think we all must dig deep and learn who we are and what we love. Once this is understood, success is right around the corner.
