Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Miller.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story begins in 2002 when I moved to New York from Jamaica to pursue my passion of playing soccer by means of an athletic scholarship. While I played soccer, I attended Mercy College, and worked in Social Services. I attained my degree in Computer Science, and landed a successful career as an IT Systems Engineer. Although I’ve done well for myself, my journey was far from complete and I didn’t even realize it.
I used to dabble in cooking as a young man when living in Jamaica. There was a natural inclination in me when it came to mastering some of my favorite dishes from my native country. Food is such an important part of my culture and roots. I am so proud to be Jamaican. I started asking my first teacher and love, my mother, for advice on mastering techniques in the kitchen. As I practiced my culinary skills, I knew I discovered another passion! But I took this discovery a step further. I learned that the best form of preventative medicine is the type of food we eat! Out of curiosity, I wanted to know just how food impacts the human body in this way. So, I decided to try it out for myself. I learned the benefits of Veganism, and how food plays such a pivotal role in our health, by following the teachings of Dr. Sebi. I blended this newfound lifestyle with my traditional cooking, to make an infusion of healthy eating with true Caribbean flavor; and so, came about NoMeatEatz!
Has it been a smooth road?
I launched the NoMeatEatz website, highlighting a five meal menu each week. I started the business out as a one man show, by cooking all the dishes on my own as orders came in on the website. Of course, this is where I hit a speed bump because the orders came in faster than I was able to fulfill them. I then realized I had to take a step back and reevaluate my plan. That’s when I decided to limit the menu to one popular key item in order to meet the demand of my customer base. So, I focused on my Jerk veggie burgers.
Aside from being the chef, staff, and CEO all in one, this journey is arduous because I am learning about business only at this time in my life. I majored in computer science and have been working in this field for a long time. It wasn’t until three years ago, that I started to delve into the business world. Everything from tracking sales, to logistics, to marketing has been achieved on my own thus far. It is very difficult for one to take on such a project of this magnitude on their own, but it is so exciting to me at the same time.
The sacrifices that come along with establishing your own business, such as not having time for myself nor relationships have been hard to deal with as well. I have been keeping myself preoccupied with work in order to stay focused. In the end, everything pays off.
We’d love to hear more about the business.
