Meet Danielle Lavallo of True Purple Designs in South Metro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Lavallo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Danielle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Even as a little girl, I loved wedding gowns. I remember looking through the Sears catalog at the pictures of the beautiful gowns made of silk, satin and lace and dreaming of the day when I would get to wear one of my own, I have always been close with my grandmother and great-grandmother, who were both expert seamstresses, and spent countless hours watching them sew and turn fabric into beautiful things. I learned so much by watching them and always dabbled in sewing and crafts as a child and young adult.

When it came time for my wedding, my grandmothers handcrafted a beautiful satin bridal bag for me. As is tradition in my family, I wore both of their bridal garters. Though old and worn, the handmade garters were still beautiful. There is a lot of history and many happy marriages attributed to them, and I was honored to wear them.

After my wedding, I realized that I wanted to start my own handmade bridal accessory business. With the help of my grandmother, I began planning my new venture. Little did I know that my dream would be put on hold for quite a few more years. Over the course of the next few years, I began a teaching career, lost both of my grandmothers and welcomed both of my beautiful sons into the world.

In 2015, I finally decided to make my dream a reality, and True Purple Designs was officially open for business. I set up my old Kenmore sewing machine that my parents gave me as a teenager, and haven’t looked back. I am so fortunate to have the support of my family and many wonderful folks in the bridal industry. It has been a lot of hard work and self-teaching but extremely rewarding. I am blessed to be running my dream business and know that my grandmothers are smiling down on me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say that one of the biggest challenges of being a small business owner is gaining exposure. Without a physical storefront, it can be difficult to get your product seen. Also, when it’s just you responsible for every aspect of the business (photographs, web design, production, shipping) it can get a little overwhelming. I jokingly call myself a one-woman-show. Over the last few years, I have learned so much about both managing and growing my business and am very grateful to the wedding professionals around me who have given me lots of advice and support. It’s so important to collaborate with and help one another.

True Purple Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My garters are lovingly handcrafted and custom made to order. I specialize in themed garters and truly enjoy turning my clients’ ideas into a beautiful keepsake garter or set. Special touches, such as hand embroidery, make each garter a true work of art and help keep the sewing techniques of my grandmothers alive.

I have recently expanded my business to include heirloom garters and handkerchiefs made from cherished family bridal gowns or other garments. It is such an honor to create a family heirloom from a garment that has so much meaning. I recently made a garter set from the skirt fabric of a dearly departed best friend so that the bride could have her close on her wedding day.

I am most proud of the joy that my garters bring to my brides and their families. I enjoy hearing each client’s story and the reasons behind their garter themes. I am truly honored to make these funny, sweet and sentimental masterpieces and add to the joy of the occasion.

I pride myself in excellent customer service. Each bride receives my personal attention throughout the process from design to delivery. I strive to create a special experience for each client which reflects in everything from my communication to my packaging. Each garter is as special to me as it is to them.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel most successful when I know that I have provided my clients with both an excellent product and enjoyable experience. It is a gift to bring joy to others and I look forward to continuing to grow my business in this way.
