Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrius Collins.
Demetrius, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a self-taught artist diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. I started teaching myself how to draw around the age of six. The main shows I learned from were Dragonball Z, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Transformers, Biker Mice From Mars, the list goes on. I would not have guessed that I would be creating and selling my art full time. Originally, I viewed art as a hobby, *Nothing more, nothing less.*
I began developing originality in my early teens which was a period where I was studying Tim Burton (my idol) a lot. I would describe my style as weird and trippy, but dope. The weird side of my imagination came from being exposed to dyes & radiation as an adolescent. I’m in the position I’m in today by taking myself serious and realizing that this is my life purpose. There was a time that I did not pick up a pencil or paintbrush for almost three years. I was at my job and realized that there was more to life than working a 9-5 for the rest of my life. I legit was not happy and was struggling with depression.
Once I regained my artistic skill after three years, I had a clear understanding on what I needed to do. I spent most of my time doing art shows and networking at different events. Fast forwarding to present day, I’m still doing art shows but I’ve progressed to the point of receiving referrals from different people. From jewelry, logos/designs, and actual paintings I’m growing to be a multi-talented artist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been an uphill battle. Chasing your dreams and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with sickle cell. From being hospitalized for weeks at a time, constant MRIs & CAT SCANS. Which resulted in the doctors finding two AVMs (viruses) in the learning skills of my brain and me being the first adolescent to receive the gamma knife laser surgery in Georgia. Losing my eyesight twice in my right eye at ages of sixteen and seventeen due to strokes. It was these events and many more that left me discouraged, depressed, and unmotivated to create.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Made In Fresh – what should we know?
My business Made in Fresh took after the idea of “Made in China”. Everything created from my brand is all original. I create custom designs, logos, paintings, and jewelry. None of my work is referenced. It all comes directly from my imagination. In my art, people know me for doing weird, trippy extraterrestrial pieces. In most of my work, you’ll either see stars/galaxy, aliens, crystals, and other things relating to the universe and being in tune with your inner being.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Creativity, imagination, and loyalty to customers.
