Meet Devotis and Alexis Lee of D Café and Catering in Westview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devotis and Alexis Lee.

The family owned and operated, D Café and Catering was opened in 2009 by Devotis Lee and husband, Alexis Lee. D Café and Catering is located in the historic, Westview neighborhood on the Atlanta’s Beltline. They dumped their entire retirement fund into the business after retiring from UPS. D Café and Catering offers a relaxed dining experience and has earned a reputation among Westview residents for the quality of its cuisine and the warmth of its staff. The incorporation of high quality, fresh, and locally sourced ingredients serves as the foundation for D Café’s menu. The team prides themselves on creating affordable, tasteful, hearty meals. D Café and Catering serves amazing all-day breakfast, brunch, and lunch.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all, but it has been worth it. We have been in business for five years and counting, and in our current building, we JUST got air conditioning and heating a little over a year ago. It was so hot in the cafe that the staff couldn’t stand it some days, and it definitely hurt our business. But we persevered. Even when money got tight (because we got this business started by investing our retirement fund into it), we always pulled through to get to the point we are at now. We are beyond grateful for the trials because they allow us to rejoice in the successes.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the D Café and Catering story. Tell us more about the business.
We are known for our authenticity. We make our customers feel like family. Although we have achieved a lot of successes, such as catering for the Super Bowl in 2019, filming a documentary about Mary J. Blige in our cafe, and much more, our proud moments are a bit deeper than the surface wins. We are most proud of being able to have longevity in this industry with limited funds as well as create avenues for others to make money, create opportunities for the community, and give an opportunity to law offenders to get a second chance in the workplace by granting them temporary employment. We also enforce programs in our business that give at-risk children in the neighborhood a chance to come in and work to help keep them out of trouble.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We don’t exactly focus on luck. We base our faith in God and we allow Him to have His Will with our business and it has paid off for us.
