Meet Devotis Lee of D CAFE And CATERING in Westview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devotis Lee.

Devotis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got sick and decided to leave corporate America, seem like I could never crack the code to really move forward… Then I felt that I should be doing something more for someone. I’m a server and a servant. I desire to make a difference and God created an avenue to do just that. So we started Catering from our home, then we started using churches and facilities and realized that there was a need for preferred caterers in Churches and we were hired by the most prominent churches in Atlanta…

Ben Hill UMC, Cascade UMC, and St James UMC, then we connected with a great young group of men in the Symrna KAPPA group and they hired us for most of their catering… That carried us to another level, then we started Catering for Golf tournaments at Chateau Elan, Atlanta Women’s Club, City of Atlanta, Roswell Historical Cottage, Callenwald, Coweta County Center, Hiram Historical Center, Newnan Train Depot… So as we built relationships we opened a brick and mortar our first cafe, a small quaint cafe in a great location…

We moved to the location because my mom was around the corner easy to access, then we discovered the Beltline and we are on it, then we moved up the street and renovated two areas for the Cafe, catering and now we have an event space. Wow… what a blessing someone like me that never felt worthy or deserving now has expanded her business and is branding the business. I continue to get on my knees to say thank you.,with tears in my eyes. We have a meaningful contract to feed the Atlanta Children Shelter, we love it and we are honored they allow us to serve them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth… You’re kidding… Smooth no vans so we have made the trip and another get up just to service one event. Many times didn’t have enough customers to pay the rent. Not enough employees to deliver and serve. Not enough finances. How about purchasing fruit already cut up from a prominent company and the fruit was on the verge of spoiling… huge mistake… We always cut our own fruit.know better you do better. How about being in a historical building that had no air or heat and attempts being open to serve customers during this last summer heat waves…

We had no customers and we couldn’t even stay I in the building ourselves.. some days we made 20.00 dollars… not good. We were able to hold on only by his grace. I quit so many times… I started filling out applications.. reality set in you had come too far to turn around or throw in the towel, had too much online… remembering that quitting nor failing is an option. We were approved for Invest Atlanta Loan… yes…

Air and Heat what a wonderful life. We are still in business, we are still smiling, we still feed those in our area at no charge and we still face challenges and struggles. We still quit and get up tomorrow and fight like hell. To stay alive and open.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a Catering Business, eat in or take out cafe and Event space for RENT. We specialize in off-site Catering. We are known for the best buckhead brisket sandwich and cinnamon rolls made from scratch! We are proud that we are a family operated and owned business.

We are proud that we are responsible business owners who provide economical solutions to some underserved families or families.. which enhance individual lives and build stronger communities.

What sets us apart is in this quick hurry up got have it now world… We still cut, wash and cook collards, we still make items from scratch. We help eat healthy not only by choices but also by measurement portions. We cook and serve with sincere Love.

What were you like growing up?
Well, I’ve always loved maybe then for the wrong reasons… or not understanding the reasons. I still have connections with elementary friends. Lack of confidence, never feeling worthy, yet lovable… I heard several teachers in my later days say oh.. it’s sweet Devotis all grown up. Have I always given then maybe to buy friendship or fit in? Not sure because I’m still a giver but now I understand why I do what I do. Before as a child I was burned and still wore scars because they were not properly dressed, so kids called me a torch, burn, ugly and I wouldn’t dress out for the gym… so I flunked the class.

So evidently it bothered me what people said or thought. I use to want to fit in in my early adult days… Then when I started understanding, I now just do what is right and allow people to process that however, they please. I make sure that my intentions are righteous and noble. I’m beginning to accept me and approve of me. I was really naive. I think I was competitive and creative. I use to take my lunch money and buy not already made, but ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies.
