Meet Dichel Graves of Dichel & Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dichel Graves.

Dichel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I launched Dichel & Co. March 2018. Dichel & Co. is a beauty company that inspires and uplifts women through self-confidence. I also created an online brand, Beauty Artistry Empire (BAEFACE Cosmetics #BAEFACE), that showcases my services and products on Instagram, Facebook, and my own website.

My career in the beauty industry officially started in 2016 when I completed cosmetology school. I have been doing hair and makeup since high school. I was encouraged by my friends and family to turn my talent into a career, and that was when I started to search the beauty industry for career opportunities.

My education is a major part in my journey to success. I graduated from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and coursework in Entrepreneurship. I then completed the Cosmetology Program at Guilford Technical Community College in 2016. The combination of my learning experiences allows me to create a solid foundation to build my businesses.

I relocated to Atlanta in 2017 for a new start in my career. I wanted to see what Atlanta’s famous beauty, fashion, and entertainment industry had to offer. I dream of owning my own salon, working on tv/film sets, fashion shows, etc. I love to network and go to beauty industry events, hair shows, and conventions. I look forward to growing my beauty company and helping women feel confident by providing them with high-quality beauty products and services.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have experienced many struggles on my journey to success. This road is not easy, there are many obstacles roadblocks, detours, accidents, delays, etc. I thought it was going to be easy but the biggest challenge is time and learning to be patient. I dreamed of being successful since I was a little girl. I dreamed of being a doctor, a singer, an actress, a writer, an artist, a nurse, an office manager, but never a cosmetologist. I never thought of doing hair and makeup as career, just as a hobby, a side job. Once I learned more about the career opportunities in the beauty industry I knew I found a career I loved. I thought I would be able to jump right in and be an expert, but there is a learning curve. The beauty industry is growing rapidly, and I have to be able to keep up with all the new techniques and trends. I love to learn so I love that there is always something new to learn and master.

The idea of being a business owner sparked my attention in college. I learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and I fell in love with idea of owning my own company. However, to build a profitable company takes a lot of investment! It is not something I can start today and stop when I feel like it. It is a commitment that I made to myself that I would start and stick with until I reach my goals of running a successful company. It is easy to give up when sales are not going like I want, or my clientele is not where I want, but these are the challenges of business. This is where I choose to be successful or not. I choose to accept the challenges and figure out how to overcome and win.

Success to me is staying in business. I know that as long as I put my hard work and dedication into my company, it has no other option but to grow and succeed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dichel & Co. is a beauty company and I started the online brand Beauty Artistry Empire to showcase my services and products to inspire others. I love the name and created the hashtag #BAEFACE to engage my audience. I specialize in Natural Hair Care, Wigs/Weaves hair extensions and Makeup.

What sets me apart from others are my creative ideas and expertise. I study hair and skin and I able to consult with my clients about their problems and help them solve them. The beauty industry is very creative and new styles and looks are created everyday. I love the fact that I create and re-create styles that my clients love.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very creative. I remember when I first learned to color, I thought it was so much fun! Once my dad taught me how to color inside the lines, it was over for everyone in my class. I went to class and was ready for our new coloring assignment. As I saw everyone else scribbling on their papers, I carefully took my time and created my masterpiece. Each year of school I made sure to enroll in art and photography classes. I love to dance and perform. I joined my step team in elementary school and my cheer leading squad in high school. I love to travel, in college I studied abroad in Italy for 6 months and experienced the beautiful country and amazing culture. I love to learn, be creative, and share memories with my friends and family.
