Meet Emily Kirkland of Elysian E. Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Kirkland.

Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started photography in high school, mainly as a hobby. I took several photography classes, which definitely helped fuel my passion and desire to pursue photography. After graduation I went to college and became very busy, my photography kind of got put on the backburner.

Last fall (2017), my husband encouraged me to pick it back up. And I did just that. When I started “Elysian E. Photography”, I had no idea how fast my business would take off. Thankfully, it has grown and helped support my family. I hope to continue to grow my business and continue to improve my work as well! It is way more than just a job, it is a passion. With every photo shoot I do, it grows more & more!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been some minor hiccups in the road to starting my business. When I started, I started with my grandmother’s DSLR camera because I did not even have one. After a few shoots, my husband bought me a new camera, a new laptop, and new editing software.

At first, my editing software wouldn’t work, then the computer he got me did not have enough storage. We ended up having to return the laptop and get a new one with more storage. That resulted in having to re-download the editing software. Thankfully, with my husbands support, I never gave up.

Please tell us about Elysian E. Photography.
Well, photography is a hard business to get into. There are SO many wonderful photographers out there. Don’t get me wrong, at times I feel super intimidated by their work. But I have to remind myself, they are YEARS into their business. I specialize in couples and families. I love working with children especially since I have a 19-month-old son myself. I realize how difficult It can be to have children not cooperate. I take as much time as needed to help out.

When I first started this, I truly had no idea how much it would grow. I was nervous, anxious and honestly did not want to put myself out there. My husband encouraged me so much to just do it and to not look back. I’m proud because of how popular Elysian E. Photography has become in our little town of Dallas, GA. I try t give everyone the opportunity to have pictures done.

I realize how expensive professional pictures can be, but I also realize just how badly people want pictures done. “We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone” -Unknown. Pictures are special, and they should be offered at a reasonable price.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Get better equipment faster! Although my equipment I first started with was good, it was not the best.
