Meet Trish Ahjel Roberts of HoneyButterflyz in Smyrna/Vinings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trish Ahjel Roberts.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Trish. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I resigned from my job as a Financial Advisor last year to pursue my business full-time. HoneyButterflyz.com is a portal to my writing, self-actualization coaching and yoga business. Although the decision to pursue my business full-time is new, the foundation has been in the making for over 20 years.

I wrote my first novel in 1995, took my first yoga class in 2000, launched Black Vegan Life on Meetup in 2014, published my first book in 2016 and coached my first client in 2019. I’m basically your garden-variety vegan, Buddhist, Brooklyn transplant writer, blogger, yogi and life coach living in Atlanta.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think I’ve ever been on a smooth road. My life has been full of ups and downs. Ironically, my blog this week is named “Beauty in the Detours.” I talk about how even the best-planned journeys are typically not point-to-point. I think the bumps in the road build our resilience, foster our patience and stir up our motivation to get back on track. I worked in the World Trade Center in NYC during 9/11. A year later, I divorced.

In 2006 I had to close the fitness franchise that I owned. I moved to Atlanta in 2007 when my daughter was only six years old. Being a single mom in a new city with a new career was incredibly difficult. I was greeted with a level of racism and sexism that I hadn’t experienced in New York. Navigating those landmines along with the challenges and responsibilities of raising a child, was incredibly difficult at times.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
HoneyButterflyz focuses on Wellness & Transformation for black women. I’m extremely proud of my weekly inspirational blog, “Thoughts on Everything.” See for yourself at HoneyButterflyz.com/blog. I’m also incredibly excited about my upcoming self-help memoir, “Thinking Outside the Chrysalis: A Black Woman’s Guide to Spreading Her Wings.” You can check out published excerpts in the January issue of Natural Awakenings and the February issue of Oracle 2020. Find them at HoneyButterflyz.com/articles. You can also find my inspirational quotes on my IG: vegan_honeybutterflyz.

I absolutely love sharing the richness of my retreats. My next mini-retreat, “Courage to Dream” will take place at the I Am Ascension Temple above Tassili’s Raw Reality in the West End on March 7. I’ve discovered there is an awakening that takes place in stillness that allows access to the wisdom of the subconscious mind. I will take a small group of women through a deeply relaxing, inspiring and transformative experience using various yoga techniques including restorative yoga, yoga Nidra, meditation and visualization. We use journaling to capture our experiences so we can access this wisdom later. Sometimes I incorporate self-actualization coaching techniques in my retreat offerings. You can check out details for the retreat at HoneyButterflyz.com/about

I am amazed by the transformation my coaching clients have experienced. It’s remarkable what you can accomplish with tools, resources and accountability. We couldn’t imagine a winning sports team without a coach, but most people don’t prioritize coaching in their personal lives – I’d like to change that.

My business is unique because I bring my whole self to it. I don’t have a separate Instagram account for business and personal. It’s all just my authentic self and has developed organically. My Facebook page started off as a place to post vegan meals for my co-workers. I teach meditation from the Kadampa Buddhist tradition that I’ve been practicing since 2010. I practice a vegan lifestyle since 2014 and use plant-based venues for my events as much as possible. Many people know me from the Black Vegan Life group on Meetup.com that I started in 2014. Our focus is on black culture, wellness and compassion. I believe I have a unique perspective and experience to share with women who seek to significantly improve the level of passion, joy and fulfillment in their lives. Self-actualization is the ultimate goal, and I’d like to be the voice in your head that gets you there.

In addition to my inspirational blogging, books, retreats and coaching services, I offer private yoga sessions virtually and in-person.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. I was a funny, curious, outgoing kid and busy creative writer. I started writing my first novel in elementary school and wrote plenty of poetry from elementary school straight through to high school. I also loved to read and draw. Friends described me as a free spirit and free thinker. I was big into the underground club scene in my teens and early twenties and a huge fan of the Paradise Garage in Manhattan. I loved cheesy comedies, psychological thrillers and classic horror films as a kid.
