Meet Iyani Hughes of 22 NaturOils in Cobb County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iyani Hughes.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Co-Owner of 22Lifestyle, LLC with my sister Maya. I grew up in a small town in Alabama… Chelsea, Alabama. Upon high school graduation, I accepted a D1 soccer scholarship with Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, GA. I think everybody probably says college was the best four years of their lives, but for me… it was the most influential four years of my life. I had your typical ups and downs.. went back and forth on what I wanted to major in.. tried to balance school, soccer and social life. The usual. Like your typical college student… I was broke.

Thankfully, I had soccer seasons where most of my meals were taken care of, but as far as leisure money… there was none! So, while still playing soccer year round… I decided to make some money without a job. I hustled. I mean doing just about any and everything to make a quick buck.. nannying, doing hair, modeling, designing and selling custom made clothes if it was crafty… I could do it. This was my key to survival through my 4.5 at KSU. Around my 4th year going into my final half year… it all changed.

My father, whom I was very close with, developed interstitial lung disease. He passed away three weeks before my last semester of college. Heartbroken and now somewhat uninspired I had to start over. What I once considered “the grind to success” was now just “the push to finish.” Naturally, I am a very determined and outgoing person, but dealing with his death and graduation… I oftentimes felt very dissatisfied and at times useless. But one thing about me… I may get discouraged, but I NEVER quit. I started to see my father in different life lessons.. and that carries me through.

I graduated from KSU as a student-athlete with honors.. sounds like a success right? Well, it was… but it wasn’t at all what I imagined it to look like. I accepted multiple part-time gigs to pay the bills, hustled with my crafts on the side, but never lost faith in finding what I wanted to do… One year and ten months, and seven jobs later… I accepted the position I wanted… a news reporter — The eagerly awaited start to my career. Now I feel like me again.. doing what I call my purpose.

My sister is two years younger than me. She has now graduated from Spelman and also looking for her first “big girl” job. Unlike me, she had zero desire to work for anybody, especially nobody in corporate America. So with her being the mastermind she is… she decided to take something she was already passionate about… natural hair, natural oils, and a natural lifestyle… and make money. And with me being the hustler I am, who also has a passion for natural hair and oils… we collided.

As far as opening our business… we, like any other young entrepreneurs had many struggles along the way. The first one was not knowing where to start with our idea.

We knew we had the vision and drive but weren’t sure how to make that vision come to life. But thank God for Google and networking… because, with that and a little dedication, we eventually figured it out and got our business on its way!
