Meet Jamel Harvey of Fix My Kix in Rex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamel Harvey.

Jamel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In the beginning, I was just cleaning and repairing my sneakers because my mother always told me that the first thing that a woman looks at besides your face is your shoes. She said that women believe if you don’t take care of your shoes, you don’t take care of yourself. After that, cleaning and repairing sneakers for my friends was just a hobby of mine. It wasn’t until 2015 that I decided to make a business out of it. The hardest thing was thinking of the perfect name. It went from “Back 2 Life Restorations” to “Sinister Restorations” to finally, Fix My Kix.
I wanted to be all about the customer so I added a mobile component to my business. I come to you, pick up, and drop off. As Fix My Kix continues to grow, I want it to be the “1 Stop Shop for Sneakers”.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been an easy road. I’ve had problems and will continue to have problems like any other business. I will adjust and turn the problems into my strengths and continue to grow Fix My Kix.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fix My Kix story. Tell us more about the business.
Fix My Kix is a mobile shoe cleaning and restoration company. We deep clean, reglue, deodorize, repaint, and brighten the soles of sneakers, boots, heels, wedges, etc. We specialize in deep cleaning shoes and brightening the soles of shoes that turn yellow. What I am proud of most about the company is that the company belongs to me. Black entrepreneurship has been on the rise and I am glad to be a part of it. What sets me apart from other cleaning/restoration businesses is that I am mobile. I will come to you, pick up and drop off your sneakers to make it more convenient for you.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. I believe in effort. The effort that you put in will be the effort that is returned to you.
