Meet Janae Marie of JMP Media Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janae Marie.

Janae, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up as an only child until I was around 17 years old. So I didn’t really have access to a lot of other children around me at home. So, I would read all of the time. I’d read, “Goosebumps,” books as a kid. Then I read books by Teri Woods, Omar Tyree, Sister Souljah, Shannon Holmes and several others. I always loved writing! So reading books helped me to escape boredom. I loved how books had the ability to take you to another world.

At age 13, I started writing poems and several of them got published. A few years later, I began writing manuscripts. During my years at Wayne State University, I would often walk to the campus Barnes & Noble bookstore and just stare at the books on the shelf. I told myself that one day I would become a published author and my books would be on those shelves.

I started making that happen at age 25. I published my first book, Flirting with Temptations, a novel about a single successful woman sleeping with married men. I later published Daddy’s Home. A tearful story of a young girl who gets abused, molested and abandoned by her father. Before I hit 30 years of age, I published Double Take, two twin brothers who grow up in the same household take two different paths in life. One in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

I am always aiming higher to reach my goals. My plan is to attend graduate school and receive my Master’s in Fine Arts in Writing and Producing for Television & Film. My ultimate goal is to be a screenwriter for both TV/Film.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an Author is not an easy road at all. I am a self-published author. So I am the one doing the marketing and promotion. It is a lot of hustling involved to get my name out there. I learned this the hard way. I don’t have a big name publisher behind me (yet!) to push my work. It’s my job! Whether my books sell or not it is ALL on me.

But I have talked to people at gas stations, hair salons, dollar store employees and just people off of the street. These people have been return customers and they are the ones who see me and yell at me, “Where’s my book? I want another book!” That is a great feeling. Being an author is teaching me to get out of my comfort zone. Because I realized that nothing ever happens there. If you want something you have to go out and get it. It will never come to you!

Also, I’m learning to stop worrying about what others think. To stop worrying who is supporting me versus who is. My dreams are mine and mine alone. Whether they come into fruition is all on me. If I wait on others to be there for me I will never achieve success.

Please tell us about JMP Media Group.
My media company is JMP Media Group. I publish realistic stories that happen in the inner city and could impact everyone.

But I also have a media news site called The Hot Scoop Ent. I plan on revamping it in 2020. It is an urban news site that gives you news on everything from Health, Education, Beauty, Entertainment, World News, Politics and more.

I’m proud of the books that I’ve written and the interviews that I’ve been able to obtain. My publication has been able to interview, Tavis Smiley, Jeff Clanagan (CEO of Codeblack Entertainment Media) several authors, singers and entrepreneurs. What sets us apart is sharing and telling stories that usually don’t get a lot of attention because mainstream media isn’t going to shine light on stories for African Americans.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would have started earlier in my life. I would have believed in myself more. I wouldn’t have worried about what others thought of me. I would have left some people behind who were doing more harm than good. I absolutely would have set the world on fire!

Seriously, confidence speaks volumes and is so important that people don’t even understand. If you don’t believe in YOU. Please don’t expect others to do so. Also, I wouldn’t have cared so much about people rejecting my books. Because it’s not personal. Any time you are in a business, no matter what the field/sector is. Take your emotions and feelings out of it. You have to work hard and grind. It’s about getting your self out there. So, you don’t have time to worry about who doesn’t like your product because it’s a small minute thing versus the twenty or thirty people who will love your product.

Overall, just have confidence and belief in yourself! Don’t be afraid to sell yourself. When you are an Author you are the brand. You are the face of the company. You are always selling yourself. Why should they buy from you? It is YOUR job to convince them to buy. Which is hard but not impossible! Keep grinding!
