Meet Jasmine Jaii Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Jaii Harris.

Hi Jasmine Jaii, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never thought I’d be a barber. It started because I had a shortcut as a teenager and was trying to save money. After watching many YouTube’s, I went and purchased clippers and cut my own hair. Definitely a lot of trial and error. A little down the line, I started asking my high school friends “let me cut your hair!” I damaged a lot of them, lol! It wasn’t until I was 25 years old, I was laid off from my job, and I decided that I would pursue a full-time barbering career and step my clipper game up. I ended up going to barber school in Philadelphia at Main Attraction Barbering Academy to obtain my license. Shortly after, I joined the Main Attraction team and became a full-time barber there. During that time, I sat under Kenny Duncan and watched him closely. In January of this year, I branched out and opened my own studio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The most challenging thing was building clientele. There were days I had no one sit in my chair and then there were days when I had a few. I prayed and did some footwork and within five months, God blessed me to have a full book of clientele. Another struggle was being a female in a male dominated industry. Some of these guys didn’t trust me to cut their hair, because of my sex. I had to prove myself to many, and that was a hurdle to get over. In 2018, I won 1st place in an Andis total look barbering competition at the Bronner Brothers Hair Show (ATL). There were 27 men and one female, which was me. When I won, it made people look at me different as to say, “women can do this too!”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am from Philadelphia and have a strong barbering business there and have been in Georgia for over two years. I am building clientele here in Georgia and will eventually open a studio about 30 minutes outside of Atlanta. It will be my main base. I don’t only groom and cut hair, I am also a photographer and clothing line owner. The studio I’m opening will consist of all these businesses merging together. It will also be a place where people can come and relax. Not just your regular barbershop. Cut and photoshoots, mens hair units, facials, beard treatments, and much more! What sets me apart is that I am ME! My style is unique and God has given me a gift that stands out!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson was trusting God and having crazy faith, even when I couldn’t see what was ahead. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint at heart. I had to trust the process and put the work in! Also, trusting God’s plan that it would always work out in my favor!
