Meet Jenae Duncan of Jenaes Dance Experience in Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenae Duncan.

Jenae, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2009, I moved from Queens, NY to Conyers, GA, eight months pregnant with my now 8-year old son. I was blessed to receive a job at the A.R. Gus Barksdale Boys and Girls Club where Jenae’s Dance Experience (JDE) was created. I began my program with two students and over my 5 years at the Boys and Girls club, I trained over 200 students, became an LLC, graduated from Georgia Perimeter College in 2013 and found my current home for JDE.

In 2015, after getting married to my best friend Robert and giving birth to my now 3-year old daughter, we opened the doors to Jenae’s Dance Experience, LLC located at 1820 hwy 20 SE Conyers, GA 30013 Suite 200. My capacity at this space is 140 students and 10 staff at one time, I currently employ 10 staff and 2 students in training. My classes are completely full to capacity with a waiting list of over 80 dancers waiting to experience JDE.

We offer professional technique training in classical ballet, tap, jazz (modern and Street), pointe, hip hop, West African with live drummers and beginners tumbling. We begin accepting students as early as 3 years old up to adults. Jenae’s Dance Experience offers affordable dance classes at $7 per class as a commitment to serving our community so families can afford to complete the 10-month program. We scholarship students who maintain academic excellence and perfect attendance and continue to be recognized for community service, dance competitions and producing 2 professional recitals per year for 8 years.

Jenae’s Dance Experience mission is to ignite self-esteem, self-respect and self-discipline in each and every member through a professional arts and drama program.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road!?! What’s that? Moving from the Boys and Girls Club here I worked out of one small room, to our own space has been a challenge. We went from one room to what is now a three studio space complete with bluetooth capable sound systems, televisions for play backs and chalk board walls for terminology and line spacing visuals. JDE has a lounge for parents and guest with cable TV, snack area and WiFi for use, a staff lounge, 2 rest rooms and over 70 lockers for our students to store their belongings.

My family and I pretty much lived in that space for 4 months to get it ready to open, there were many challenges financially, emotionally and physically, it took a toll. Ultimately with faith, hard work, lots of sacrifices and consistency if it’s suppose to be it, will be!

Please tell us about Jenaes Dance Experience LLC.
I don’t know of another studio that has a program that is structured the way ours is or runs they was ours does. We are really big on professionalism from time management to overall appearance which is expected from our staff and students. All of our students are put into classes first based on age and then assessed on technique, we don’t believe in training without being challenged. Every group has a uniform that is a specific color for their group and they all receive a schedule for the year so there are no hidden fees or surprises.

We want our students to leave our studio prepared to enter college and or the industry as a force. All of our students take all classes to build a well rounded dancer who will be able to sustain and build longevity in their dance or drama careers.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is starting officially dance school at 8 years old. I danced all the time from 2 years old my mom says but most block parties and children’s parties or basically, wherever I heard music! Joining a dance school was totally different from dancing in front of the mirror, family and friends. It was the best thing that could’ve happened to me and I thank my mom because she truly couldn’t afford it but she believed in my gift.
