Meet Jennie Lasater of Lice Ladies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennie Lasater.

Jennie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Lice Ladies over 8 years ago. I’m a self-proclaimed nerd and have an MS in Biology. I noticed when these services were newer to the U.S., that most head lice services in our country are owned and operated by people without science or medical backgrounds. This idea for a company fascinated me and I knew that I could start a company that was founded on science. I loved the idea of helping others that struggle with the rampant issue of human head lice (pediculosis capitis).

My mission and purpose for Lice Ladies was founded on offering parents, schools, day cares, camps, etc., a safe, natural and effective way to treat human head lice. Statistics prove that in the U.S., head lice is second only to the common cold in elementary aged children and younger. It’s becoming more rampant with junior high, high school and even college students. All of those selfies and “lice-ta-gram” pictures with head-to-head contact have helped make it more common in older kids. Head lice are increasingly resistant to pesticides like other bugs – bed bugs, fleas, etc.

After I had been in business a few years, I started thinking about making my own product line. I wasn’t happy with the products that were being used as they were watered down and not very effective. I began product development. I also was looking into franchising the company and as I did my research and realized how much I was trying to grow these businesses, I knew I needed a trusted co-owner to help me run them. Well, who better than my best friend of 20 years, Molly Brandenberger?! I called her up at her corporate job and said, “Hey Dude, do you want to come pick lice with me?” Of course, she did and thus the Lice Ladies partnership adventure began!

Molly and I now have five corporate clinics in the metro Atlanta area. We also are so proud of our all-natural product line. The liquids have an NDC from the FDA, our comb is registered as a medical device with the FDA.

We also have franchised the company and have 2 franchises in Dallas, TX as well as one opening in Westchester, NY this August. A few more are also in the works in other states. Our first franchisee, Rachel Silverstein, in Dallas has become like family. She’s proven to live and breathe this brand we’ve built and she adds so much to our Lice Ladies brand!

We love our company!

Has it been a smooth road?
It was definitely a challenge to navigate the product development with the field testing, efficacy reports and ensuring we were in total compliance with the FDA. It was 2 years of non-stop work! The other challenge was the franchising process. It’s regulated by the FTC, so the amount of paperwork and being completely type-A about each process, expense, method, etc. was imperative. I’ve never worked so hard in my life! But wow, I learned so much!

I’ve realized that when I feel something is impossible, if I just take a deep breath and get it figured out – step by step – I can do it! I’m not afraid to ask for help if I don’t know something either! Better to get help from an expert than to make a big mistake!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lice Ladies Atlanta has five clinics where we treat people for human head lice. We offer professional services by technicians that are trained extensively to be experts at our craft, while maintaining the strictest levels of integrity and privacy. We abide by HIPAA laws with client privacy. All Lice Ladies technicians are trained in the area of customer service as well as the removal of Head Lice and Nits. What sets us apart from our competition is both the exceptional service and our guarantee to be lice free. We have the full ability to understand, anticipate, and cater to our clients’ needs and wishes. We understand that while we are providing the highest level of professional service, our technicians must also be sensitive to each clients’ individual circumstances and needs. We offer very competitive pricing!

We are proud that our product line is environmentally safe and approved for infants, nursing mothers or expectant mothers.  An all-natural occurring enzyme is the main active ingredient in our product. Our great product is also currently the only natural lice removal product with an NDC (national drug code).  Our comb is also registered as a medical device with the FDA. We are also very proud to be legally franchised. We, here in Atlanta, are the Franchisor. We are excited to offer the opportunity to others to open up in other cities where this service is needed.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Actually, no. Atlanta is one of the most over-saturated cities with head lice companies in the U.S. It’s a specialty service, so most people aren’t going to immediately go directly to a service like this. This specialty service requires a large population in order to be successful. We have that large population but currently have over 14 different companies here…many of those with multiple locations. There are so many competitors here that some of the newer companies aren’t profiting like they need to. However, there are other cities where this type of service is very much needed and there are not many if any other head lice companies there.
