Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Dougherty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back when I was living in Birmingham, I was reading a quote online that said something to the effect of “If you ever get mauled by a bear, I hope it stays away from your face, because I think you’re cute.” I remember thinking that was so much more heartfelt and human than any Hallmark card. We’re all a little bit weird and most people aren’t great at expressing their feelings. So I decided to start a greeting card company that was made for the awkward turtle in all of us.
Has it been a smooth road?
The business started off with a bang! We put some of our cards on Reddit and one of them made the front page overnight. My then-business partner and I immediately had a card business! We filled all the orders that came in over the next few weeks, and then things slowed down. We realized we were going to have the same issues as all other small businesses. Keeping up our online presence and keeping our audience engaged. Keeping up with How Awcard’s online and social presence has been the greatest struggle. Social media is a full-time job!
How Awcard has always been homed on Etsy, but I really wanted to break into physical sales. When I moved to Atlanta, I was incredibly lucky to be reached out to by Crafted Westside, who gave How Awcard a home in the corners of their unique stores. Last year I jumped into the art festival scene with the Fall Fest at Candler Park, and this year things exploded at Inman Park Fest!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the How Awcard story. Tell us more about the business.
The cards at How Awcard are simple and quirky, sometimes nerdy, always funny. We want to be known for upping the greeting card game. We want our cards to bring as much joy as a gift itself.
- $4 per card
