Meet Jillian Mitchell of Active Sol in Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Mitchell.

Jillian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was about three or four my mom bought me ballet shoes to wear around the house because she thought they were cute, but I took it very seriously. For as long as I can remember I knew I would be a dancer. I trained in ballet in my hometown before going away to professional school at the age of fifteen.

When I graduated from high school I got my first professional job with New Jersey Ballet. I danced in a number of companies in the northeast before moving to Atlanta. Here I’ve worked with The Georgia Ballet, GloATL, and as a freelance artist. I found that opportunities here were fewer than other major cities, and after navigating through that frustration for some time, I realized that someone needed to be actually creating opportunities and perhaps I could be a force for that.

I founded a new dance company called Kit Modus. I felt that if I was going to create an arts organization I would only solve half the problem and that there needed to be some element to my contribution that would include the ever-present issue of finding funding the arts. I started researching becoming a business owner when I saw that Active Sol Yoga was available for purchase.

Though I am no major yogini, I felt it was within my realm to connect to that world. I saw the potential to expand the business to include other modalities including dance, pilates, gyrokineses, and all types of movement studies. It’s been six months since I became the owner and I’m working hard to improve our space, and current offerings. I’ve been able to use proceeds to assist artists with support, monetary donations, and space for rehearsals.

Has it been a smooth road?
Stepping into an established business with deeply invested staff and clientele is delicate. There’s a lot of work to be done to cultivate trust, and that just takes time.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Active Sol story. Tell us more about the business.
Active Sol has always been known as an extremely affordable, not-too-crowded beautiful space, offering quality yoga instruction. That will always be true. I intend to compliment -not replace- our many yoga classes with other methods of exploring physicality and movement.

This means that the value of our memberships and packages will be enriched with a wider variety of offerings and that our community will be opened to movers of all sorts. The most unique thing about Active Sol is that proceeds are going into the community. Members and visitors can find it rewarding and motivating that their practice is helping fund the arts.
