Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn River.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when I was three years old singing Jill Scott’s “A Long Walk” in 2001. Probably wasn’t the best song choice for someone my age but it was Jill Scott!? (And yes a lot of people can testify to this) Since then, it’s almost as if my spirit knew that the arts was my calling. I attended a Christian Academy school where even though I was timid, I had teachers that noticed my gifts and were not afraid of putting me on front street. And I mean putting me in any kind of plays such as a Christmas play, a Thanksgiving play it did not matter. But because of that experience of being on stage I was able to find my passion. The ability to become another character and develop raw emotions from the inside that I never knew I could do was and still is the best feeling.
So I thank them to this day for pushing me and encouraging me to get out of my bubble because they saw something in me that I didn’t even realize I had at that time. Coming from a family that has a musical background I think it came as a shock to my father’s side that I wasn’t so eager to sing or perform in front of them considering the fact that they were blood. By the time I got to high school I was introduced to the theatre world and was able to see how things work not only on the front end but the back end as well. I was able to act in plays but I also got the chance to create set designs and create costumes and even help with lighting. At that point, when it came to applying for colleges I was confident in what it was that I wanted to major in. After graduating, I attended Albany State University as a theatrical arts major.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not but let’s be real if you have something you’re passionate about, what road is going to be smooth? After my freshman year of college I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, and my rheumatologist advised that it would be best to stay close to home for treatment. So… online classes HERE I COME! Lol. I never let my illness set me back… however, I see it now as a blessing in disguise. Even though I wasn’t living the campus life like any other college student, I was blessed to get my first ever booking in the movie ‘The Hate U Give’. And that was the start of me working in my acting field. Plus it’s where I met my set family that had the same passions as myself.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an aspiring actress but I am known for my singing. On my Instagram (@cute_dimples3) is where I do covers for the most part but it gravitates people to my page to see what else I’ve got. I have also had the opportunity to work with some amazing artists such as Dajana Carter and AJ Farley to name a few. My vocals can be found on the following: ‘Home’ – AJ Farley streaming on all music platforms. But the other songs will be coming out soon. When it comes to me being set apart from others, I have my own style of singing, I don’t try to sound like anybody else. There’s no description for the word of the style that I sing, it’s just how I feel and how it comes out. It will never be the same it will always be different. It’s not jazz, it’s not R&B, not neo soul, it’s just me so I would say it’s unique and you would just have to hear it for yourself. I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it. Lmao (shout to Missy Elliot)
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Hmmm, the best thing about our city… our blending of cultures. It’s a beautiful thing especially in the city because that’s where you see the most outgoing and free spirits just comfortable in their own skin. I feel like everyone can agree with me on this but the TRAFFIC here is ridiculous, that’s my least favorite thing about it. It doesn’t matter what time of day it’s just always there!!!!!
