Today we’d like to introduce you to Kahlil Wonda.
Kahlil, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Highlanda Sound was started by myself, my brother Superpec, and our cousin AGARD. Our DJ team was incubated and launched by Extreme Media, one of the strongest urban event promotion companies in ATL during in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Extreme put on some of the most successful club events in the city on a weekly basis and therefore my Highlanda Sound partners and I were positioned to rise very quickly. In addition to learning the how to pack out and rock a party, we quickly made connections with other promoters, club owners and influential figures in the music business.
Highlanda Sound debuted on the Atlanta dancehall scene back in early 1999 and over the next 10 years, we had the opportunity to DJ for crowds in excess of 4000 people, open for some of the industry’s biggest acts, and travel throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, and Japan to perform, while holding down long-standing residencies in Buckhead and Midtown.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey has definitely had some bumps along the way. The music business is extremely competitive and it takes hard work to emerge from the pack. Once you are thrust into the limelight, it then takes more consistency in your work ethic to maintain that position with all the distractions that are present. With all this energy and effort being poured into your craft, it can be very difficult to nurture healthy relationships in your life. The balancing act is a huge challenge.
Please tell us about Highlanda Sound.
We entertain and promote reggae music globally. We organize the annual Bob Marley Tribute and curate a popular “Rub-A-Dub” reggae event series in Atlanta. I currently host and produce the Reggae Lover Podcast which is available on Soundcloud and in the Apple Podcast and Google Play Music directories.
Since 1999 Highlanda Sound has performed thousands of events at hundreds of venues in Atlanta, all over the USA, and internationally with tour dates in the Caribbean, and Japan. This popularity has stemmed from consistently rendering our growing fan base completely satisfied and thoroughly entertained.
Highlanda is an original sound in that we do not follow other selectors or DJ’s to play what they play. We have a keen ear for quality music, a visceral sense of what an audience will enjoy, and the technical skill to smoothly transition in and out of popular or more obscure selections while controlling the ebb and flow of energy on the dancefloor.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I had the pleasure of spinning all night at the original Club E.S.S.O.S on the night of my 21st birthday. Success came at a young age and a great deal of fun was had. If I could start over I would still enjoy every moment, but I would also put more emphasis on the business side, ensuring to document systems along the way and plan more strategically for the long haul.
